Excerpt
Here’s a scene between Mike and his best friend Mindy right after he meets Summer:
“She’s pretty,” Mindy says.
“Yeah.”
“Did you ask her out?”
“I sort of let her know I’d be here for lunch at noon.”
“Think she’ll show?”
Good question. Summer doesn’t seem like the girls I’ve entertained lately. If she came to Timberland to save her parents some money, it means she’s both caring and practical. That’s a far cry from drunk and horny. I shrug when I realize I haven’t answered Mindy’s question.
She smiles, and her eyes go in Summer’s direction. “She’s heading this way.”
My head jerks up—totally not playing it cool. It’s like this girl is making me lose the mojo I found after Fallon. I don’t want to go back to being the guy who fumbles over his words every time he talks to a girl.
“I thought you two could use some new cups,” Summer says, handing one to Mindy and the other to me. “I told my manager there’ve been complaints about defects in the cups. Something that makes them crack easily and spill the coffee. He felt it best to replace yours before you refilled.”
“I like you already,” Mindy says, smiling at Summer. “I’m Mindy, Mike’s best friend slash long-lost sister.”
“Nice to meet you, Mindy. I’m Summer.”
“Pretty name, and it happens to be Mike’s favorite season, too.” Mindy turns to me and cocks her head.
Yeah, it’s my favorite season all right. It means hot girls in skimpy clothes. Not that I can say that. “I’m looking forward to summer coming.”
Mindy stifles a laugh, and I want to smack my own forehead. My comment would have elicited a really dirty response from Fallon, but not Summer. When she figures out why Mindy is laughing, she turns six different shades of red.
“Don’t mind me,” Mindy says. “I need at least three cups before I’m sane in the morning.” She takes her cup and refills it.
“Thanks for these,” I say, holding up my cup. “I would’ve had to listen to her complain the entire way back to the dorm and then again every time she yawned today.”
“I’ve never seen anything like you two.” Summer studies my face. “No guy has ever just wanted to be friends with me. It must be nice.
Oh crap. I’m cock blocking myself now. She thinks I’m the nice guy she can just be friends with. I’m going to kill Mindy for this.
