5 Star Review: Kiss Me That Way (Cottonbloom #1) by Laura Trentham

A river divides Cottonbloom in two: the upscale enclave on the Mississippi side and the rundown, rough and tumble side in Louisiana. They’re worlds apart—but nothing can build a bridge like love…

Cade Fournette never had it easy Cottonbloom. He stuck around long enough to raise his orphaned siblings and then hightailed it out West—and never looked back. Even though he’s made a success of himself in Seattle, Cade never lost the toughness and the angry edge that helped him survive down South. His only weak spot: the girl he left behind…

Monroe Kirby came from the wealthy side of town, but that didn’t protect her from her mother’s drinking—or her mother’s boyfriend. It was Cade who did that, on a long-ago hot September night, before he disappeared…along with a piece of her heart. Now Monroe is a physical therapist who can fight for herself, and it’s Cade who could use some conditioning when he makes an unexpected return back home. Will he and Monroe pick up where they left off and finally explore their mutual passion—or will the scars and secrets of the past divide them once more?

My Review

I received an advanced copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

I love small town romances. Maybe it's because after living in NYC for almost 12 years, a part of me (sometimes) longs for small town living. But then again maybe it's because Laura Trentham has nailed the small town romance genre. Her Falcon Football series is fantastic and I was very excited to hear that she was going to be writing a new series. When I read her books I find myself getting transported to wherever they take place or wanting to book a ticket to go visit. (I'm also pretty sure I was southern belle in a past life so that's part of it too.)

When Cade Fournette's parents suddenly died, he found himself taking care of his younger brother and sister. He dropped out of high school and took whatever jobs he could to make sure that they were cared for.
One night, while heading out to poach from crayfish nets, Cade discovers Monroe hiding on his boat. After telling him why she had to sneak out of her house, the two strike up a conversation. She may have only been thirteen years old to his seventeen, but they form a bond that would stay intact. Unfortunately, for the both of them Cade, suddenly leaves town without an explanation and then doesn't return for ten years.

When Cade does returns home it is because he is injured and they are both surprised to discover that Monroe will be the one helping him heal. She certainly has grown up since the last time they saw each other. She's not only a successful physical therapist, but she also uses her spare time to teach self defense to young girls. She understands all too well what some of those girls are dealing with and she wants to do her part in making sure that they can take care of themselves. Before they know it, Cade and Monroe find themselves falling back into their old relationship, but since they are older and wiser, they find that their feelings for each other have turned romantic.

I loved Cade and Monroe's relationship when they were teenagers and even more so now that they are adults. Growing up, Cade should have never even crossed paths with Monroe. Their town was, and still is, very divided in terms of class, but that never mattered to them. And although they kept their friendship a secret, it wasn't because of the judgement they would have encountered, but more because they didn't want to share what they had with anyone else. Them meeting up was more of an escape from their every day lives more than anything. They just seemed to understand one another. And to this day, even though Cade is a successful business man, some people in town can't get past the way he grew up. One of my favorite scenes in the book is at a fundraiser where Monroe makes it very clear that Cade is the man for her.
“Come with me.” Reality in the form of a crooning Michael BublĂ© song and the murmur of laughter-punctuated conversation drifted closer.
“What are you doing?” An edge of panic replaced his dark sexual tease. She’d thrown him off-balance. Good. Time for her to return the favor.
She led him back into the great room. The song changed to an eighties ballad she occasionally heard on the classic rock station and in old movies. While it wouldn’t have been her statement song of choice, it would have to do.
She stopped at the edge of where a handful of couples swayed like they were reliving their high-school prom.
“You want to dance with me ?” Incredulity but also a sense of wonder lilted his question. “In front of the Tarwaters and all of Cottonbloom, Mississippi?”
She answered by slipping her hand in his and squeezing. As if they had made a pact to jump at the same time, they moved forward on the same beat of music. She turned toward him, sliding her hands up the lapels of his tuxedo to link around his neck.
He tightened his arm around her waist and brought them closer than she’d danced with Andrew. “You sure you know what you’re doing?” He splayed his fingers on her back, tucking them under the edge of her dress. She felt branded.
“I have no idea what we’re doing; do you?”
His mouth tightened before he laughed softly and skimmed his smooth chin along her temple. “Not a clue.”
Whispers and side-eye glances came from all directions. She’d be lying if she said she wasn’t uncomfortable, but not because she was ashamed of Cade.
The song ended, and they stopped swaying yet stayed interlocked. The next song was faster paced, leaving them in limbo.
Cade tensed , sending a cold stare over her shoulder a second before someone tapped her arm.
Along with Cade building on his past relationship with Monroe, he also sets out to repair his relationship with his siblings. He never told them the real reason why he left town and while he may have kept in touch with his family, their relationships became strained and he rarely returned home. The longer he stays in Cottonbloom, the more he realizes how much he missed it and how much he wants to stay. For both his family and for Monroe. Cade goes on the quite the emotional journey and it was a pleasure to read.

I'm so excited for the rest of the series. It continues with Tally's (Cade's sister) book and then Sawyer's (Cade's brother). I am excited for Sawyer's book because it's one of those "I love you but I also "hate" you" situations. It's gonna be good y'all. I can already tell.

RELEASE DAY BLITZ: Empire by Rachel Van Dyken

Empire 0 days   empire smash cover art

I have lost everything.

My purpose

My love

My soul

Death knocks on my door, I want to answer, but every time I reach for the handle -- the promise I made her brings me back.

So I breathe.

I live.

I hate.

And I allow the anger to boil beneath the surface of a perfectly indifferent facade. I am broken, I don't want to be fixed.

But the Empire is crumbling and it's my job to fix it.

My job to mend the pieces that were scattered over thirty years ago.

A trip to New York, only one chance to redeem a lost part of our mafia family.

The only issue is, the only way to fix it, is to do something I swore I'd never do again.

An arranged marriage.

Only this time,

I won't fall.

Or so help me God, I will kill her myself.

My name is Sergio Abandonoto, you think you know my pain, my suffering, my anger, my hate?

You have no idea.

I am the mafia.

I am the darkness.

Blood in. No out.

The loving couple in the rain

Sergio looked ready to strangle me. “No. I don’t believe I asked for an annoying little sister, but if that’s what you’re offering, please don’t let me stop you. Just know, I won’t hesitate to put you over my knee if you get out of hand.”

The minute the words left his mouth. I froze.

He froze.

The taxi driver stared little laser like holes into the rearview mirror.

And Sergio leaned toward me.

I swallowed as tension swirled around us.

He gripped me by the chin and turned my head to the side, his lips brushing my ear. “It’s like you have a death wish.”

“You wouldn’t do it.”

He pulled back as both of his eyebrows shot up, and then he looked down, like he had spotted something.

I followed the direction of his gaze and let out a little gasp as a gun dug into my stomach.

“It’s been directed at you for the last four minutes,” Sergio said through a practiced smile. “I meant what I said. Listen well. I keep my word. Kiss me, and blood will be spilled.”

“Y-you’re a crazy person!” I hissed, shoving at his chest. “And I wasn’t going to kiss you!”

“Sure you weren’t.” He put the gun away. “Good talk though, right? Oh look, the movie theater.”

To say that I scrambled out of the car like a kid running away from her kidnapper would be a gross understatement, but the minute my feet hit the pavement, I paused.

My body told me to run.

The guy had pulled a gun.

On me.

I didn’t even watch violent movies.

Get the beginning of Sergio's story in Elude

Twenty-Four hours before we were to be married--I offered to shoot her.

Ten hours before our wedding--I made a mockery of her dying wish.

Five hours before we were going to say our vows--I promised I'd never love her.

One hour before I said I do--I vowed I'd never shed a tear over her death.

But the minute we were pronounced man and wife--I knew.

I'd only use my gun to protect her.

I'd give my life for hers.

I'd cry.

And I would, most definitely, lose my heart, to a dying girl---a girl who by all accounts should have never been mine in the first place.

I always believed the mafia would be my end game--where I'd lose my heart, while it claimed my soul. I could have never imagined. It would be my redemption.

Or the beginning of something beautiful.

The beginning of her.

The end of us.

STRIPPED BARE by Emma Hart is coming June 21st!
What do you get when you mix a bachelorette party, the queen of dating disasters, and a stripper so hot he was forged from the fires of hell? Screwed. You get screwed....

Cocky. Commanding. Powerful. Relentless.

Those four words all summed up West Rykman perfectly.
So did filthy, dirty, sexy, and addictive.

He was supposed to be my one night stand...not my new marketing client.

He was definitely not supposed to be back inside my pants, not that anybody told him that.

I knew one thing: What West Rykman wanted, West Rykman got.

And he wanted me.

What happens in Vegas... might just make you stay.

My Review

I received an advance copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Not going to lie. I am a sucker for the whole second generation thing some authors have going on, especially when I enjoyed the first generation so much! I love seeing the Alpha men being all protective as as uncles, fathers, and grandfathers.

In this book we get June's story. June went away for college and while she was there, she met Evan. The two fell in love and secretly got married. Seems simple enough, but then Evan went to boot camp, got shipped off to war and without an explanation, sent June divorce papers. She was devastated, but she signed them.

Fast forward a few years and June is living back home and is in need of protection thanks to a shady ex boyfriend. And it turns out that part of her protection comes in the form of Evan sitting outside her house. The two are quite uncomfortable around each other, but it is clear that they are both harboring feelings for the other person. Since Evan works for her family's business, they end up in the same place at the same time more than once and it doesn't take long before they reconcile. I was actually a little surprised at how quickly that happened.

I LOVED Evan. He was just the sweetest and when he made the decision to win June back he was ALL IN. Like 125% all in. Throughout the book he shared these little moments with June's dad (Yay Asher!) that just made me love him even more. Asher may have been wary of Evan at first, but the two came to an understanding where June was concerned. And they were able to do that guy thing where one just looks at the other, maybe nods their head a little bit and the other just knows what that means. I loved that Asher (and the rest of the Mayson clan) were so accepting of their relationship, especially after they learned the truth.

If you are a fan of the Mayson family clan, this is must read. We get a little bit of everyone and Sage's story is even teased a little more. I can't wait to read that one!

Seeing Evan again is taking a toll on me, I can’t sleep and my mind is in a constant state of turmoil. I wake up in the middle of the night from dreams of us. The memories of him, of us are too much. Some memories have the ability to heal. The ability to light up the dark because the beauty of the memory is so bright you’re still able to bask in it.

But the memories of us are killing me slowly. They remind me that for one moment I had everything while reminding me it’s gone. It’s the realization that we’re done that’s killing me. The realization that I can see him but can’t touch him that he exist but he’s not mine is agonizing.

RELEASE DAY BLITZ, 5 STAR REVIEW & GIVEAWAY: 1984: Against All Odds by Rebecca Yarros

Cover Design: Regina Wamba - MaeIDesign and Photography
Release Date: May 27, 2016
Love the music—never the man.

At twenty years-old, Sabrina Caroline was America’s sweetheart pop star, until she took a year off to treat her social phobia that her cut-throat-manager/mom paid top dollar to keep quiet. Now as part of her comeback, she’s forced into collaboration with one of the hottest rock bands topping the charts—Birds of Prey—whose lead guitarist happens to be her biggest mistake…and her biggest regret.

Hawke Owens never imagined Birds of Prey would surpass the basement of the Duncan High School for Performing Arts, let alone score them a European tour. But success has its price, and for him, it’s being forced to work with the only girl who shattered his heart—Sabrina Caroline. She’s everything that he remembers and more, every memory and fantasy come to life. At first touch, their connection is electric, but it’s also as strong as her determination to follow her number one rule—she doesn’t date rock stars…even though she’s become one.

Loving her again is as natural as holding his guitar, but she’s destroyed him once, and this time the stakes are higher, more public, and the consequences life-altering.

Against the backdrop of the birth of MTV, they’ll have to choose between the demands of their label, and the demands of the heart.

My Review

I received an advanced copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Here's the thing about Rebecca's writing...it makes me cry. Even when the story isn't sad, like this one. There is just something about her writing and the way she writes that just gets to me...every time. And I mean that in the best way possible!

Brie and Hawke were high school sweethearts, but when he struck it big with his band, Brie couldn't handle it. From a very young age her mother told her to never fall in love with a rock star and she truly believed that a relationship with him would never work. So she walked away. The ironic part is that Brie because famous herself. But after being discovered she felt like she owed it to her mother to sign a recording contract and make it big as well. But the public figure she has become, is not the person she wants to be.

After taking a year off thanks to her social anxiety, Brie somehow ends up in a deal to duet with Hawke's band, Birds of Prey. She is hesitant at first, but eventually realizes she can use this opportunity to her professional advantage. When Hawke and Brie are reunited, it is a bit rough at first. They have to hash things out and confess a few things before they are on even ground again. But once they are...WATCH OUT. It's like the last few years never happened.

It was great to watch them rediscover their love for each other. Hawke came through for her in some very big ways, sending a message to every one in their lives, that he was totally committed to making things work. Once again Rebecca wrote a guy that I absolutely LOVED and want to put on my book boyfriend list.

And don't be fooled by the fact that is a novella. There is A LOT going on in this book. And it's got some of the BEST 80's references. MTV! The music! Bette! The clothes! and of course...THE HAIR. It's just all a bunch of 80's goodness!

He took my face in his hands and leaned in until he was all I could see, all I could feel, and smell. How easily he consumed me with a simple touch. “There have been too many women. Too many meaningless encounters. Too many faces. But there’s only been one name in my mouth, and it’s always been yours. Only yours.” His mouth met mine without preamble, and before I could protest, I was lost to the feel of his lips on mine. It was so familiar, yet new. When his tongue stroked the seam of my lips, I opened for him, and reveled in his groan as he sank into the kiss. I found the support beam against my back as he pressed against me, our bodies aligning with the fit I’d always remembered as perfect. It was still just as exquisite. His hand stroked down the side of my body, a path of fire igniting in his wake until he gripped one of my hips, pulling me even closer to him. With the other, he tilted my head for a deeper assault, exploring the recesses of my mouth, lingering like he didn’t already know every part of me. It was the best second first kiss in the history of kisses.

I arched, pushing my breasts against his chest, and looped my arms around his neck. Then I kissed him back with every ounce of passion I’d missed these last three years. I kissed him the way I’d fantasized about since I walked out, with tiny nips and fuller, lingering caresses. When that wasn’t enough, I sucked his tongue back into my mouth and reveled in his groan of surrender.

He still wanted me, and that knowledge was more intoxicating than any alcohol, more high-inducing than any drug.

His hand shifted, running under my dress until he met bare skin where my garters attached to my stockings. “Holy shit, Brie. You’re going to be the death of me.”

He squeezed my bare thigh, and I lifted my leg, semi-wrapping it around his hip.

I’d almost forgotten how powerful it was to kiss Hawke, how it consumed every sense, every thought, until I was just a jumble of feelings and need. It was never just a kiss, it was a full-body experience that blocked out the rest of the world.

A moan escaped my lips as his set to my neck, and my head rolled back against the beam. He hit the spot right above my collarbone and I whimpered.

“I love that sound,” he murmured, then gently sucked that patch of skin so he could hear it again.

“Hey guys—whoa!” Chad’s voice penetrated my haze of desire.

“Go the fuck away,” Hawke said, moving so I was covered from Chad’s gaze. “Yeah, well, I would—I mean, good for you guys, and it’s about damn time—but

Oscar Oswald is here and he’s asking for us.”

I pushed gently against Hawke’s chest. If Oscar Oswald was here, it could mean huge things for their career. He was the biggest name going in rock. “You need to see what he wants.”
