Her marriage and divorce a well-kept secret, the last person June expects to run into when she moves back to her hometown is Evan. Angry over the past, she does everything within her power to ignore the pull she feels whenever he is near. But how can she ignore the pain she sees every time their eyes meet? How can she fight the need to soothe him even if she knows she’s liable to get hurt once again?
Is it possible for June and Evan to find their way back to each other again? Or will they be stopped by an outside force before they ever have a shot?
My Review
I received an advance copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
Not going to lie. I am a sucker for the whole second generation thing some authors have going on, especially when I enjoyed the first generation so much! I love seeing the Alpha men being all protective as as uncles, fathers, and grandfathers.
In this book we get June's story. June went away for college and while she was there, she met Evan. The two fell in love and secretly got married. Seems simple enough, but then Evan went to boot camp, got shipped off to war and without an explanation, sent June divorce papers. She was devastated, but she signed them.
Fast forward a few years and June is living back home and is in need of protection thanks to a shady ex boyfriend. And it turns out that part of her protection comes in the form of Evan sitting outside her house. The two are quite uncomfortable around each other, but it is clear that they are both harboring feelings for the other person. Since Evan works for her family's business, they end up in the same place at the same time more than once and it doesn't take long before they reconcile. I was actually a little surprised at how quickly that happened.
I LOVED Evan. He was just the sweetest and when he made the decision to win June back he was ALL IN. Like 125% all in. Throughout the book he shared these little moments with June's dad (Yay Asher!) that just made me love him even more. Asher may have been wary of Evan at first, but the two came to an understanding where June was concerned. And they were able to do that guy thing where one just looks at the other, maybe nods their head a little bit and the other just knows what that means. I loved that Asher (and the rest of the Mayson clan) were so accepting of their relationship, especially after they learned the truth.
If you are a fan of the Mayson family clan, this is must read. We get a little bit of everyone and Sage's story is even teased a little more. I can't wait to read that one!
EXCERPT
Seeing Evan again is taking a toll on me, I can’t sleep and my mind is in a constant state of turmoil. I wake up in the middle of the night from dreams of us. The memories of him, of us are too much. Some memories have the ability to heal. The ability to light up the dark because the beauty of the memory is so bright you’re still able to bask in it.
But the memories of us are killing me slowly. They remind me that for one moment I had everything while reminding me it’s gone. It’s the realization that we’re done that’s killing me. The realization that I can see him but can’t touch him that he exist but he’s not mine is agonizing.
