Best of 2016...Part 2

I read so many amazing books in 2016 that I broke it down into two lists. I give you part 2 of that list!!

You can read my Best of 2016 Part 1 here.

“A rock star with no rhythm is a man with no soul.” – Stone Lockhart

As the lead singer of one of the hottest bands to hit the rock scene, fucks are free, drugs come easy, and music is life.
For as long as Stone can remember, Willow has been his music – the notes that weave his soul together.
His rhythm.
Until he threw her away.
All he has left is a handful of pills and a few lines of powder to make him forget her.
And he tries, over and over.

Clean and ready to make things right, he’s faced with the fact that Willow’s moved on. She’s not the same girl he cast aside. Willow’s a woman sure about her purpose in life. Sure about who she’s meant to love.
Stone may be lost without his rhythm, but Willow has found so much more.

Moments.

Our lives are a collection of moments. Some utterly painful and full of yesterday's hurts. Some beautifully hopeful and full of tomorrow's promises.

I’ve had many moments in my lifetime, moments that changed me, challenged me. Moments that scared me and engulfed me. However, the biggest ones—the most heartbreaking and breathtaking ones—all included him.

I was ten years old when I lost my voice. A piece of me was stolen away, and the only person who could truly hear my silence was Brooks Griffin. He was the light during my dark days, the promise of tomorrow, until tragedy found him. Tragedy that eventually drowned him in a sea of memories.

This is the story of a boy and girl who loved each other, but didn’t love themselves. A story of life and death. Of love and broken promises.

Of moments.

From his dirty-blond hair and breathtaking smile, to the abs from heaven and the irresistible V in his waistline, everything about Bodi Olympic-gold-medalist Banks screams hot piece of @$$.

Yet there’s more.

Dark shadows lurk behind his soulful, serious eyes.

I’m enamored. He’s captured me.

How can running an art foundation with Bodi Banks turns into a slow-burning, epic romance, even though he tries to push me away at every chance? How can I stay away from a broken, routine-driven man whose soul cries to be forgiven for a crime only he believes he committed? Or is that a lie?

It’s crazy how fast the buzz comes back after you’ve been sober for so long.

Whiskey stood there, on my doorstep, just like he had one year before. Except this time, there was no rain, no anger, no wedding invitation — it was just us.

It was just him — the old friend, the easy smile, the twisted solace wrapped in a glittering bottle.

It was just me — the alcoholic, pretending like I didn’t want to taste him, realizing too quickly that months of being clean didn’t make me crave him any less.

But we can’t start here.

No, to tell this story right, we need to go back.

Back to the beginning.

Back to the very first drop.

This is my love letter to Whiskey. I only hope he reads it.

Welcome to Panic, a sultry Miami nightclub where bodies and hearts move to a beat that doesn’t stop at sunrise—the setting for “a magnificent story full of deep emotion” (Sawyer Bennett).

Katherine: I thought I could enjoy a night out like a normal person. I thought I could handle the flashing lights, the pulsing music, the crowded dance floor. I couldn’t have been more wrong. After having an anxiety attack and passing out during my sister’s engagement party at Panic, I wake up in the arms of the hottest guy I’ve ever seen. Nick Moreno’s no gentleman. But he might just be the man I need to help me take control of my life.

Nick: When I hear there’s some random girl passed out in the back room of my family’s South Beach nightclub, I’m pissed. My dad’s already behind bars and we can’t afford any more bad press. But after giving her a lift—literally—back to her apartment, I stop seeing Katherine Wilson as some random girl. She’s gorgeous, vulnerable, and braver than she knows. And when we kiss, all I want to do is pull her close and promise that she’ll always be safe in my arms.

Groupie
/ˈɡro͞opē/
a person, especially a young woman, who regularly follows a celebrity in the hope of meeting or getting to know them.

See example Tiffany Wendel:
Whore. Slut. Cleat Chaser. I’m used to the names so they don’t bother me. These are my boys. My friends. So what if I like to have dirty sex with them? My body is no one’s business but mine.

Why is Rowen Flanigan making me re-think how I live my life? Making me question my choices? He’s only a rookie.

rook·ie
/ˈro͝okē/
a member of an athletic team in his first full season in that sport.

See example Rowen Flanigan:
Player. Son of a legend. Rookie.

Sure, I’d heard the stories of the groupies before. Who hasn’t? I’ve just been more sheltered than my teammates. So what? I didn’t expect her to be smart. Witty. Kind. She brings me to my knees in every way – except one.

That part? I’m saving until the time is right.

So how in the hell did I end up falling for a Groupie like Tiffany? And how in the hell is this going to work when everyone at my job has had a piece of the one thing I haven’t?

It started off as a battle of wits. Me: the ordinary girl with a big mouth against Him: the sexy bastard with a big...ego.

I thought I’d hit the jackpot when I was upgraded to first class on my flight to London.

That is until HE sat next to me. Gabriel Scott: handsome as sin, cold as ice. Nothing and no one gets to him. Ever. He’s a legend in his own right, the manager of the biggest rock band in the world, and an arrogant ass who looks down his nose at me.

I thought I’d give him hell for one, long flight. I didn’t expect to like him. I didn’t expect to want him. But the biggest surprise? He wants me too. Only in a way I didn’t see coming.

If I accept his proposal, I leave myself open to falling for the one man I can’t manage. But I’m tempted to say yes. Because the real man beneath those perfect suits and that cool façade just might be the best thing that’s ever happened to me. And I just might be the only one who can melt the ice around his heart.

Let the battle begin…

My Review

I received an advanced copy of this book with the promise of an honest review.

Olivia meets Nate when he becomes the subject of a sports documentary that she is producing. A documentary that will help her move up in the world of a male dominated industry. Nate has been drafted by the New York Warriors and the documentary will follow his path from college to the professional team. He's hesitant about participating, but he knows that it will be beneficial to his career.

The first time Olivia and Nate meet is at the house he shares with a few college teammates. After being greeted by Nate's three shirtless roommates (it was quite comical), she comes face to face with the man himself. She is immediately struck by how attractive he is, but manages to reel it in and get the first interview done. After all, she is a professional and has a job to do. After meeting a few times, Nate's initial wariness goes away but he is still worried. An incident that occurred during his freshman year, one that he absolutely never talks about, threatens to emerge and he wants it to stay out of the documentary. But it's Olivia's job to make sure the documentary covers everything, whether Nate likes it or not. They come to an understanding about the subject and by the time they make it to New York, their relationship has become intimate. While at first they manage to keep their professional and personal relationships separate, life has a way of making things difficult and both of their happiness is threatened.

I can't even begin to explain how much I love Olivia and Nate. These two were such a wonderful couple. The chemistry between them was absolutely electricI found myself eagerly anticipating that moment when Olivia and Nate crossed the line of inappropriateness. And the pay off was amazing.
“I know how to have fun,” I said, my hands gripping the edges of the pool table.
He grinned, his lips now only inches from mine. “Good. Let’s have some fun then.”
Nate hesitated for just a moment, and in that second the knowledge that being with him was a terrible idea reared its ugly head. But before I had a chance to fully process it, he closed the gap between us, his lips grazing mine in an almost kiss. He teased, his gaze locked on me the entire time, consuming me, washing away my lingering concerns that this shouldn’t be happening.
“Nate…we shouldn’t. We can’t,” I spoke the words against his lips, even as I was unable to muster the will to push him away.
“And yet we are,” he said, smiling against my mouth. Firm hands cupped my neck, pulling me closer and I let my body go lax against his as he deepened the kiss. And my God, could Nate Sullivan kiss. His mouth devoured mine, biting and sucking, and there in his childhood Batcave, I all but melted into his arms.
A noise that sounded oddly like a moan filled the space between us and a split second later, I realized it had come from me. Nate pulled back, his mouth twitching in a half smile as he said, “This okay?”
I schooled my features as victory flared in his eyes, knowing the shock of just how much more than okay his kiss was had to be written all over my face.
Nate sank to his knees, his hands skimming the length of my back, covering my butt with a squeeze and moving down to rub along the bare skin of my legs. My breath hitched when they trailed a path back up and under my skirt, where he slipped them under the fabric of my underwear.
“Your skin is like fucking silk.” He groaned, dropping his head to my stomach. Nate caught the hem of my t-shirt in his mouth and pulled at it, practically growling as he tilted his head to look at me. Releasing it, he said, “You know what I thought the first time I saw you?”
“That I was the devil, here to ruin your life?”
He chuckled, his breath warming my stomach. “That was my second thought.” His hands began making small circles over my skin. “I thought you were the team’s way of hazing me. Making me sweat over some bullshit documentary and then sending you as the punch line. Thought I’d died and gone to heaven for a second there.”
My eyes widened. “You…you thought I was a stripper?” I started to push away from him but his grip tightened on my butt.
“No, I merely hoped you were.”
No sooner than the words were out of his mouth he lifted me, his hands big enough to create a chair for my butt. He stood, turning us so his back was to the pool table and lowered me back down.
I looked up at him, not even trying to hide the wonder I knew was written across my face. “Who are you, Nate Sullivan?”
“I thought I was just a college kid.” He cocked his head, fire filling his gaze. “Isn’t that right?”
Before I could respond, he turned away, bending to pull the sheet that covered the pool table up and off it.
I frowned. “I never said that.”
He turned back to me, his rough hands cupping my face as he kissed me, the playfulness of before gone. “No, but that’s what you think.”
Picking me up, he turned and walked the few paces to the table, setting me down on the ledge as he released the hold he had on my lower lip.
“You don’t kiss like a college kid.”
“I don’t fuck like one either.”
Truer words have never been spoken. At that point Olivia and Nate have been dancing around each other for a while and they know that them getting together it is inevitable, so they just give in. And from there it just gets hotter. WOW.

This book is easily one of the best I have read this year. I just loved everything about it. Sports romance. Older woman/younger man. NYC location. Comedy. Angst. Crazy sexual tension you can cut with a knife. And of course lots of sexy times. And all of it is FAN-FREAKING-TASTIC.

Exclusive Excerpt:

She lifted an eyebrow. “Did you just Netflix and chill me?”

“No. That would be unnecessary considering you’re already naked in my apartment.” I paused, a slow smile spreading across my face. “But if that’s what you want…”

Forty five minutes and another round between the sheets later, Liv was snuggled up against me, her eyes glued to the television.

“Man she’s a piece of work.”

Liv nodded, eyes lighting up. “She’s such a girl boss though. I love her.”

“You’re a girl boss.”

Liv gasped. “You think?”

I nodded, catching her chin between my fingers. “Yep. And it’s sexy as hell.”

She grinned. “That might be the nicest thing you’ve ever said to me.” Liv shook her head. “I still can’t believe you’ve never seen House of Cards. I’m almost jealous of you, you’ve got so much to look forward to.”

I had gathered that earlier, thanks to the filthy look she’d given me when I first mentioned that not only was I not up to speed on the series, I didn’t even know what it was about.

She sighed, one nipple peeping out from under the sheet as she rolled onto her back, and I had to fight the urge to roll on top of her. I wasn’t kidding when I’d said she’d get plenty of exercise if she stayed. It was exactly like our first night together. No sooner than we’d finished one round, I was ready to take her again. I knew it was foolish not to be sound asleep, giving my body the rest it so desperately needed, but around Liv my dick just got other ideas. It was…needy.

Liv glanced at me. “What are you thinking?”

“That I want to fuck again.”

Her eyes widened. “Really?”

I shrugged. “Pretty much.”

She rolled to her side, propping one arm under her head. Sadly it caused her nipple to go back into hiding. “I forgot how sexual guys are in their early twenties.”

I shrugged. “You should have seen me when I was sixteen.”

Liv laughed. “I can only imagine.”

“Not sure it would have been all that pleasurable for you though.” I cringed. “Pretty confident there was only ever one person coming back then.”

“Well don’t feel too bad, you’re certainly making up for it now.”

I looked away, not wanting her to see the satisfaction on my face. Because truth be told, while I knew Liv enjoyed the sex we had—the multiple orgasms and the fact that she’d returned for round two were enough of a sign—the idea that she’d most likely slept with guys years older than me with plenty more experience on how to make a woman feel good left me with this irrational sense of frustration. Like I was automatically playing catch up in the race to…what? What did I want with Liv? Sure, no guy wanted to think they weren’t the best sex a woman had ever had, but the thought that I cared about more than just my own selfish pride kept niggling away in the back of my mind.

And while I was being so honest with myself, I might as well acknowledge how my insecurities extended to things other than sex. Like the fact that I’d painstakingly picked up after myself around the apartment every night before I crashed in the sad hope that I’d actually get her into my bed one day. Sure, an element of that was about leaving college, starting fresh, playing grown-up as we all used to joke about, but I couldn’t deny that a small part of me was doing this to show Liv I wasn’t just a college kid anymore.

“Earth to Na-ate.” She drummed her fingers into my shoulder and I blinked, looking over to her.

“Sorry.”

“Where’d you go?”

“Nowhere.” I flipped onto my side, facing her. “Say that again.”

She frowned. “Say what?”

“My name, say it like you just said it.”

She looked at me warily. “Na-ate.”

I groaned, throwing one arm over my face. Her voice was insane. I was pretty sure I could come just from the sound of my name on her lips. In fact I almost had that first night we were together, my fingers between her legs as she’s told me exactly what she’d wanted, her voice all raspy and breathless. I’d had to stop myself from rubbing up against the table ledge for fear of embarrassing myself.

“Is everything okay over there?”

I nodded from under my arm. “Your voice. It’s…hot.”

She giggled, and a second later her mouth was at my ear, breath warm as she crooned, “You like my voice, Nate Sullivan?”

I peeked out from under my arm to look at her. “I’ll give you my signing bonus if you’ll call every night and tell me to sleep well…in that voice.”

She fell back against the pillows, stretching her arms above her head. Aaand nipples.

“You can’t afford me.”

“Not yet, but think of me as a long term strategy. You’ll make millions.”
