There once was a boy, and I loved him.

Logan Francis Silverstone and I were complete opposites. I danced, and he stood still. He was quiet, while I ran my mouth. He struggled to find a smile, and I refused to frown.

The night I saw the darkness that truly lived inside of him, I couldn't look away.

We were broken together, yet somehow whole. We were wrong together, but always right. We were the stars that burned across the night sky, searching for a wish, praying for better tomorrows.

Until the day I lost him. He threw us away with one hasty decision--a decision that changed us forever.

There once was a boy, and I loved him.

And for a few breaths, a few whispers, a few moments, I think he loved me, too.

My Review

I received an advanced copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

This is another emotional one. I basically cried my way through this book. Talk about an emotional roller coaster. Yeesh. As it says in the book multiple times "But after the highs, always came the lows." So many highs and so many lows. Just when you think things were good...BAM...something happened to bring it back to the bad.

This book is told in two parts. The first part takes place while Logan and Alyssa are in high school. They meet when Logan comes into the supermarket where Alyssa is working. Alyssa notices him and helps him out when he doesn't have enough money to make his purchases. The two strike up a conversation and before they know it, they are the best of friends. Eventually their friendship turns romantic and it's the summer before Alyssa is leaving for college. Unfortunately for them, tragedy strikes and they are separated. The second part of the book takes place 5 years later. Alyssa and Logan are back in the same town and they need to confront not only their past, but also what is happening in the present.

On paper Alyssa and Logan should have never worked as a couple. They came from two very backgrounds. Logan had a junkie mom who was given drugs by his absent father and he often took drugs. Alyssa was from an upper middle class, single parent family. She played piano and planned on majoring in music therapy in college. Their lives couldn't be more different, but a couple they are perfect for each other. They know exactly what the other needs and when they need it. At times all they had to do was say the following two sentences. It was kind of the thing that grounded them and made everything okay:
“You’re okay, Logan Francis Silverstone,” she said.
“I’m okay, Alyssa Marie Walters,” I replied.
They just have an unbreakable bond that allowed their love to survive the toughest of situations. Trust me...they go through a lot and when Logan professes his love (again) to Alyssa I cried like a freaking baby.

“I’m still in love with you,” he repeated walking closer to me. “I’ve tried to stop it. I tried to ignore it. I tried to wish it away, but it won’t leave. Whenever you’re near me, I want you closer. Whenever you laugh, I want the sound to never fade. Whenever you’re sad, I want to kiss your tears away . I know all of the reasons that I shouldn’t want to be with you . I know that I can never be forgiven for what happened all those years ago, but I also know that I still love you. You’re still the fire that keeps me warm when life becomes cold. You’re still the voice that keeps the darkness at bay. You’re still the reason my heart beats. You’re still the air in my lungs. You’re still my greatest high. And I am still truly, madly, painfully in love with you. And I don’t think I’ll ever know how to stop.”

So. Many. Tears. It was clear from very early on in the book that Alyssa and Logan were meant to be together. And while I knew that they would eventually get their happily ever after, so much happens and it's so well written that there was a few times where I thought they may not.

The first book in this series made me cry. This one did too. I don't know if there will be a third book in this series, but if there is I will definitely be reading it. And making sure I am stocked up on kleenex.
