BLOG TOUR & 5 STAR REVIEW: Hawke (Cold Fury #5) by Sawyer Bennett

Title: Hawke (Cold Fury, Book #5)
Author: Sawyer Bennett Release
Date: March 15, 2016

The New York Times bestselling hockey series featuring the Carolina Cold Fury continues as the team’s most notorious party animal gets blindsided by the one that got away.

Off the ice, elite defenseman Hawke Therrien enjoys his fair share of booze and good times. And why shouldn’t he? He’s worked his way up from the minor leagues and made himself a star. The only thing Hawke misses from that life is the pierced, tattooed free spirit who broke his heart without so much as an explanation. She’s almost unrecognizable when she walks back into his life seven years later—except for the look in her eyes that feels like a punch to the gut.

Vale Campbell isn’t the same girl she was at twenty. As crazy as she was about Hawke, her reckless behavior and out-of-control drinking were starting to scare her. She had to clean up her act, and that would never happen with Hawke around. Cutting him loose was the hardest thing Vale ever had to do—until now. Because she’s still crazy about Hawke. And if he could ever learn to forgive her, they just might have a future together.

My Review

I received an advanced copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Seven years ago Hawke left home to join a minor league hockey team, but before he left, his girlfriend Vale broke his heart. She dumped him without telling him why and he never looked back. Now he's one of the NHL's best defensemen and the last person he expects to see when he walks into training camp is Vale, but there she is. They haven't seen or said a word to each other in seven years and now they will be working together.

At first things are a bit strained (as they would be after what happened), but Hawke finds that the feelings he had for Vale are still alive and well. And very strong. It isn't long before he realized that he wants Vale back, but he has a few obstacles (some quite serious) to overcome before that will happen. Vale is quite stubborn and holding on to the reason why she broke up with him all those years ago, which makes her very wary of getting involved with him again. Eventually the truth does come out and it is a tough one to swallow, especially for Hawke. I know I got emotional reading that scene.

But when it comes down to Vale and Hawke as a couple, they still work. Yes, they have a lot of things to discuss and they both make some decisions that made me wish I could reach into the book and give them a good Gibbs smack, but they are still very much in love with each other. And it helps that there are plenty of scenes like the one below to help them find their way back to each other, for good.
“Bedroom. Now,” I prod him along.
Hawke leans his head down and runs his nose along my jaw. “Still sassy,” he murmurs, his breath causing prickles to break out on my neck. “But you’ve forgotten the way it is between us.”
“And what’s that,” I gasp as his teeth scrape against my skin.
“That I’m in charge, and we’ll get to your bedroom when I’m good and ready.”
And just like that . . . I melt. Completely sag against him, letting the weight of the world roll right off my shoulders. I let my worries go and trust that my needs will be taken care of. I gladly and most willingly hand over the control to him.
It’s one of the things I loved most about him in the past . . . his self-awareness and confidence that he would always get the job done no matter what. Ironic, that when I needed that most from him, I refused to let him have the chance to prove himself.
This book is the definition of second chance romance goodness. I loved every word. I feel like the author has upped her game for each book and my love for this series has only grown. We get a glimpse into how every one is doing and like always they are there when the others need someone to talk to or a helping hand. I believe we only have one more book left in this series so bring on the Cold Fury boys on more time....I'm game!  :-)
