5 Star Review: Those Cassabaw Days (Malone Brothers #1) by Cindy Miles

A bond that not even time can break…

As kids, Emily Quinn and Matt Malone were thick as thieves in the tightly knit community of Cassabaw Station. Then Emily's world crumbled into tragedy, and she was sent away. She's just returned to run a beachside café she now owns. A free spirit…with a guarded heart.

But while this town still feels like home, Matt is nothing like the boy she remembered. He is a man lost to shadows and doubt. As he helps Emily restore the café, however, their childhood bond reignites and unfurls into bittersweet longing. Now they face the greatest test of friendship…love.

My Review

Those Cassabaw Days is a lovely book. I love the friends to lovers trope and this even has a little bit of a second chance romance thrown in there.

Emily and Matt were best friends growing up, but when her parents died when she was 12 years old, Emily and her sister had to move away. The two lost touch and now it is 15 years later and Emily has returned to Cassabaw Station to run her Aunt's cafe.  She isn't even in town for an hour before she runs into members of the Malone family and most importantly, Matt.

A lot has changed since Emily left town and the most interesting thing to her is the man Matt has become.

Then, she backed up and couldn’t help but stare some more. Matt Malone had really, really changed quite a lot in fifteen years.
Well over six feet, with broad shoulders and narrow hips, Matt loomed over her. He had the same long dark lashes that framed those trademark Malone eyes. Although his hair was shorn, the cowlick remained just off the center of the hairline near his forehead, and was as obnoxious and untamed as ever. The gash through his brow still stood out, like a brilliant bolt of lightning, just as fresh as the day Emily had given it to him when she tripped him during a race to jump off the dock. It now gleamed silver, intriguing. Gangly had turned into lean. Confidence, maybe arrogance, wafted off him in waves.
His black T-shirt was just snug enough that she could see his chiseled chest and biceps. Muscles flexed at his unshaven cut-in-stone jaw as he studied her. How had her prank-playing, skinny little childhood friend turned into this man.
And while she appreciates that man he is today, Emily senses a darkness within him that wasn't there when they were children. Matt is quiet. Gives one word answers. And kind of grumpy. Emily takes his new personality in stride, but is determined to bring him back to the boy she once knew.

Emily needs help renovating the cafe and Matt is the guy for the job. The two spend a lot of time together and grow close again, but Matt keeps Emily at an arm's length. Matt mentions numerous times that he is only home temporarily. Now that is he no longer in the military, he just needs to figure out what he wants to do with his life. Eventually Matt gives in to his attraction to Emily and just when they seem to be on the path to happiness, thing go awry.

I loved Matt & Emily together. She had this wonderful, personality that rubbed off on everyone she met. She was always so upbeat and tried to see the best in everyone. You can't help but like her. And despite Matt's initial gruffness, Emily manages to find the boy she once knew. The two of them complement each other and are able to build on their past friendship. Below is a little example of what I loved so much about Emily. It's almost impossible to read it without smiling.
Owen gave her a gentle squeeze. “I’m glad you’re home, Emily,” he said. “And you’re welcome over here anytime.”
Emily liked his sincerity. Owen Malone was indeed a gentle soul. “Thanks, Mr. Malone.” She cocked her head. “I really like your skin.” She looked up at him and smiled wide. “Reminds me of a perfectly aged copper penny.”
Owen laughed. “Is that so?”
She nodded. “It is.”
“Do you always do that?”
Her eyes moved directly to Matt’s—he was intently watched the interaction. For a split second, his face softened.
She knew exactly what he was talking about. “Yes, I do. I like to find something right off the bat appealing about a person and let them know what it is.” She shrugged. “I find it a rather useful bonding agent. Plus, it lets people know I pay attention to them.”
Nathan laughed, and Owen gave her a gentle hug. “I think it’s a fine quality, Emily.”
“Thank you.” She looked at Matt. Just as she could see sadness in Nathan’s eyes, there was something altogether different in Matt’s. Almost feral. Yet she also felt like he saw completely inside of her.
“Let’s head to the kitchen, then,” Owen said, and tugged on Emily’s shoulders. “Eric will be home any minute with supper.”
Emily allowed Owen to lead her through the foyer and into the wide-open kitchen, where Jep stood in front of an enormous white enamel stove, stirring something in a big white enamel pot. Still wearing those baby blue coveralls, he now donned a red apron. Jep had to be all of eighty years young, and although his hair was now silver throughout, he had plenty of it.
“I like your hair, Jep,” she announced. “The way it flips up by your neck and over your ears. Reminds me of the feathers of a snowy owl.”
Jep stared at her from the stove. “An owl, you say?”
She grinned and nodded. Nathan again laughed.
I loved Matt's family. Matt's grandfather, Jep, was hilarious and had no problem calling Matt out on his grumpy attitude. I also really liked Matt's brothers and I'm looking forward to future books in this series. But best of all they brought Emily back into their family as though she never left. Emily's only remaining family is her sister Reagan, so it meant a lot to her that they were so welcoming.

And speaking of Reagan. I am guessing we are going to see Emily's sister in a future book. At least I hope we do. I mean, I have some thoughts.  ;-)

BLOG TOUR, REVIEW & GIVEAWAY: Stupid Boy (Stupid in Love #2) by Cindy Miles

From Cindy Miles, bestselling new adult author of STUPID GIRL, comes the next installment of her blockbuster Stupid in Love series – STUPID BOY.

Brax Jenkins and Olivia Beaumont are the most envied couple at Winston University—but the so-called “virginity dare,” orchestrated by Brax’s old fraternity, almost tore them apart. Now, a new dare is taking shape, and it’s sure to set emotions ablaze--more than ever before.

Winston’s “It Girl” Harper Belle isn’t just president of the Deltas--she’s also a master at keeping her ugly past a secret. So, when the Kappas’ dare hits closer to home for her more than anyone realizes, she devises a competition of her own as payback. Three sorority sisters will seek out a notorious womanizer on campus and--unbeknownst their “mark”--secretly train him to be the perfect boyfriend. Always up for a challenge, Harper targets the biggest player she can find: Brax’s wickedly handsome foster brother Kane McCarthy.

But, Harper discovers there’s much more to Kane than girls, games, and partying. His easy smile belies the quiet, old soul reflected in his deep brown eyes. All it takes is one night, one secret laid bare, and one kiss from Kane to shift Harper’s world on its axis. Suddenly, the girl who’s always walked a straight and narrow path can’t think of anything else except losing control.

My review

I received a copy of this book from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.

I absolutely loved Cindy Miles' first book "Stupid Girl." I was excited when I found out we would get another book in the series and this time around the book would be about Brax's foster brother Kane. Harper runs into Kane not knowing who he is, but it isn't long until she finds out:

Kane McCarthy. Mysteriously quiet and attractive. Street kid. Foster kid. From Boston. And he was here to run bets during football season. Not much to know about a person, and what there was to know was pretty shady and a little frightening. But by the time my last class finished for the day, he’d entered my mind at least a dozen or more times. Slightly frustrating when trying to concentrate on the notes Professor Sizemore was giving on the Ming Dynasty. That quiet, slightly accented voice and those dark smoky eyes kept interrupting my thoughts. Disruptive, to say the very least. Then there was that crooked smile—
Harper instantly feels an attraction to Kane and he becomes her target in a quest to make over a bad boy. Unfortunately for her, the more she gets to know Kane, the more she likes him and realizes there is more to him than just running numbers and coming across as a bad ass. He is actually a very sweet and thoughtful guy who is holding on to secret that not even Brax knows.

Harper is also holding on to her own secrets. She suffered a great loss as a young child and was thrust into the arms of a crazy lady who held her mentally hostage for almost her whole life. My heart broke multiples times for her while reading this book.

The connection that Harper and Kane share is so strong and he can see right through the persona she has made for herself. From the moment they meet, he challenges her to take risks and be the person she truly is. She accepts those challenges and slowly starts to come out of her shell.

God I loved Kane. While I am a sucker for a guy with a Boston accent, it was Kane's actions that made me love him. He continually shocked Harper with his kind gestures and insightful words. She just assumed the worst with him and every time she saw another side to Kane, she let him see the side of her that she spent so many years hiding. Kane is also a very observant guy and noticed the little things that helped him uncover the real Harper. And don't even get me started on how sweet he was when it was just the two of them:

I looked at her then; so soft in the candlelight. Her mouth swollen from kissing, and her eyes damp. “I can’t stop staring at you,”she said in that soft voice, and her fingers dragged over the ridges of my stomach. “With my eyes or my hands.”
If a girl could make a guy’s heart melt, she just did. I pushed her hair over her shoulder. “So there you are, ”I murmured.
She tilted her head. “What do you mean?”
I traced her lips with my thumb. “I’ve been looking for you my whole life.”
See what I mean?

I also loved Harper's friend Murphy. She was the perfect friend for Harper. She was everything that Harper couldn't let herself be. Harper wasn't a cold person, but she held back a lot and Murphy sensed that in her. She never gave up on her friendship with Harper while trying to bring out a more relaxed Harper. Plus she was hilarious and I love a good sassy best friend!

This book is a wonderful follow up to "Stupid Girl" and I can't wait to see what the author will bring us with "Stupid Love.

Kimmy's Book Boyfriend List - Part 3

Of course I love all my book boyfriends equally. Kind of. Okay, maybe not, but I do love them all. These are the guys that make me audibly sigh when I think about them. And if you are reading this, you probably know exactly what I am talking about.

These guys may not always make the best choices and I may have wanted to give them a good Gibbs smack, but I still love 'em. Not sure what I mean by a Gibbs smack? Here you go:

Haven't we all wanted to do that? Trust me...it comes in handy when discussing characters with your fellow book lovers.

Now keep in mind...this is only part of the list. It was getting so long that I knew I would never get around to posting the darn thing, so I'm breaking it up. 5 delicious men at a time. And in no particular order.

11. Max

Max is just HOT. He carries on a secret relationship with Chloe and these two have AMAZING chemistry.

“You tell me what you want from me, and I’ll always deliver, baby.” His voice was raw, and I realized that he did want me as badly as I wanted him, he was just better at controlling it. And then suddenly, his hands were gone from inside me.
“Max!” I whipped my head from side to side to get a read on him, but it was no use—I couldn’t see him anywhere. Out of nowhere, his arms wrapped around either side of me, and he rubbed massage oil all over my front. His hands slid easily between me and the table, and in a minute I was covered front and back with the oil.
He grabbed the fabric strung between my two wrists, pulling back on it so I slid further down the table a bit and his hard cock penetrated my core. He was fully seated inside of me as I let out a startled cry, but he took no mercy on me, using my bound wrists to slide me up and down the table while he slammed in and out of me.
The nerve endings inside me were on fire, sending mini shockwaves of bliss out to the rest of my body. The friction on my nipples as I moved up and down the table was almost as intense as the feel of his hard shaft breaching me.
Sounds of Max’s labored breathing and the slapping out of our bodies as they joined together in ecstasy filled the room. I’d never heard a more beautiful chorus.”

12. Locke

Here is why Harper Sloan is a GENIUS. All throughout the Corps Security Series we got glimpses of Maddox Locke. He would show up and be all alpha-y and then show us his sensitive side with one of the women. We didn't learn much about him, but all these little glimpses of him had me in intrigued. Then he got his own book, I read his story and I fell head over heels for him.
“I’m not going to fuck you,” I say.  Her eyes narrow at that, and I could kick my own ass for blurting that out.  “Yeah, clearly I’m not good at this shit, Em.  Cut me some slack.  Bottom line, I don’t want you away from me.  I need you near me.  I need to feel your warm skin, smell your intoxicating scent, and hear your sass even when you’re silent.  I get that we need to hash shit out, but right now, I need to feel that you’re still here more than I need to waste time with some pleasantries of separate bedrooms.  I need you, Em.  Maybe even more than you need me at the moment, and that’s a whole fucking lot.”  I kiss her lightly, breathing her scent in deeply, before taking off to the bathroom to shower.”

13. Locke

Apparently if you name your hero Locke, I will want to make him my boyfriend. This Locke is sexy fighter pilot with a British accent. He's a gentleman, but also a badass.
"My fingers ran through his hair and I pressed my lips harder against his. He chuckled then nibbled my bottom lip. A flurry of anticipation erupted as I wondered where he would nip next. His lips traveled slowly below my ear and I tipped my head back slightly and lightly purred. His breath warmed against my skin, as his hands explored under my tank and up my back. An electric pulse ignited as his fingers traced along my spine. I slid my fingernails gently down his arms. Bumps rose upon his skin and I knew he wanted me as much as I wanted him.
He stopped kissing me, and my body fell into instant withdrawal. I wasn’t ready for it to end. I leaned into him. His tongue traced along the pulsing vein in my neck and I resisted the urge to cheer out. And when his lips brushed against my cheek and his breath tickled my ear, I shuddered.
“Bloody hell. You take danger to a whole new level,” he whispered and nuzzled into my neck."

14. Brax

I'm a sucker for a hot guy with a Boston accent, so I loved Brax from the moment he was introduced. And he plays baseball. LOVE HIM.
“The now-familiar male laugh sounded from the other side of the closed door. “Um, pardon me, sweetheart, I’m not leaving until you tell me your name. You’ve made it an issue now, see?” The way he said sweetheart came out like sweethaht. Pardon, pahdon. “I’m sitting down. In the hall. Against your door. And I got patience, Sunshine. A fuckin’ lot of it.”

15. Branson

Branson was a giant asshat in previous books and I did not like him at all. Then I learned his story and he totally redeemed himself. And now I love him.

“I release one of her hands and bring mine down to stroke her cheek. “Hey, no talk of other men or convents when you’re in my bed. Or ever. I mean it, Ariana. I want permanent. Marriage, kids, all of it. Because…”
She smiles, a slow, satisfied smile, and I pause to capture this moment.
Letting out a deep breath, I know it’s now or never. “I love you. I’m in love with you, and I know, without a shadow of a doubt, I want to spend the rest of my life with you. Only you.”
Her hooded eyes widen, a small gasp escaping her lips. “Branson, I… Oh my God. Are you serious?”
My hand cups her cheek, my thumb rubbing against her skin as I look down at her. “I've never been more serious in my life. I know it seems soon, but I spent far too long wasting my life with someone I didn't love. Now that I have you and I know how I feel, I don’t want to waste time questioning it or thinking it’s too soon. I don’t want to waste another second of my life without you knowing how much I love you.”

Excerpt

By the time I’d finished a very poor attempt at studying for an Art test and exited the library, the tell-tale signs of pending dusk had crept onto Winston’s manicured campus. The early November air felt crisp against my cheeks as it whisked through, rustling the leaves and sending several pirouetting to the ground to land in scattered colors on the grass like some strange abstract stained glass. Knowing darkness would soon swallow everything, I hurried to the campus coffee house and café that stayed open until midnight. Inside, students sat at tables studying, their laptops open, the light illuminating their faces and coffee cups by their sides. As I took my place in line I selected my usual pre-packaged turkey sandwich and a bottle of lemonade and stood, waiting to pay.

    “That’s all you’re eating?”

I jumped at the voice behind me and turned to find Kane there. Instantly, my insides froze. He gazed down at me, his hands shoved into his pockets, those broad shoulders sort of hunching toward me, almost…cornering me; his eyes as worn and soft as the leather jacket he wore.

“Um, yes,” I answered. I gave a hesitant smile. “Not very hungry, I guess.” What was he doing here? Suddenly I felt closed in—a feeling I avoided at all costs.

“So what’s good here?” he asked. His Boston accent was heavy and void of the letter r, just like Brax’s, only…softer. Quiet. The kind of voice that you had to pay close attention to or else you’d miss what they were saying completely.

I couldn’t believe he was talking to me. I shrugged, pretended he didn’t bother me, and held up my sandwich. “Turkey?”

He said nothing as he lifted three turkey sandwiches from the cooler; his smoky gaze remained riveted to mine. Then, he bent his head close. “Kane McCarthy.”

I looked at him then, taken back by how his voice washed over me and made my skin tingle. I forced myself to breathe; I wasn’t used to being in this kind of situation. Guys just didn’t go out of their way to talk to me. I made sure of it. But I didn’t balk. I mean, after all—Kane was my potential reformation Dare. Right? Murphy’s words rushed back to me. Reform the barmy beast! I breathed. Smiled. Pretended. “Harper Belle.”

Again, his eyes softened, and as we stepped up to the cashier he gave her a nod and inclined his head toward me. Before I could say a word, the cashier had rung our orders up together, and Kane handed her a twenty.

I looked at him, embarrassed. “Oh no, really, that’s okay, you don’t have to—”

Kane’s eyes moved over me. “Yeah,” he said quietly. “I do.”
