Review: The Forgotten Bride (Brides of Holland Springs #3) by Marquita Valentine

Sexy former reality television star Luke Ambrose has returned to make a home in Holland Springs again—this time as the newest doctor for the town’s local clinic, and with every intention of making up for his past wrongs against his ex-wife.

After slipping into a coma due to a freak car accident, Lily Sawyer finally wakes up in the hospital, unable to remember the past ten years of her life. But what she does remember—she’s a dance teacher and she’s married to her high school sweetheart, Luke.

Torn between letting the past be the past and telling Lily the truth about their fragile relationship, Luke gives her the basics—they’re divorced but trying to work things out.
However, when Lily regains her lost memories and none of them include her new relationship with Luke, will she leave him once again, or give their love the second chance it deserves?

My Review

I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

If you like second chance romances, this is the book you should read.  It is the ultimate second chance romance story. Lily and Luke are getting a second chance at their failed relationship, but with a little twist. Lily has lost the last 10 years and still thinks she is married to Luke! Talk about a clean slate.

Lily and Luke were very young when they got married. They loved each other, but it wasn't enough. When Luke gets an opportunity that can benefit them in terms of money, he takes it and leaves Lily behind. They both thought that the other would show up in their lives again, but when that doesn't happen, Lily files for divorce.

Now it is 10 years later, they both have grown up a lot, and they are living in the same town. Luke is determined to make things right with Lily and just when the two of them are getting to good place, Lily gets in the accident that takes her memories. Luke doesn't leave her side the whole two weeks she in the hospital and when she does wake up, she thinks they are still married. Following her doctor's advice, Luke is honest with her and tells her that they are no longer married . But he does tell her that they were starting to work things out and he will help her any way he can.

I loved Luke. The man he is today is very different from the one who was married to Lily. He has learned from his mistakes and knows that he is going to have to work to make Lily his again. With the help of Luke and other people in her life, Lily starts to remember things from the last 10 years. Unfortunately, for the both of them, one of those things is the memory of her and Luke breaking up. It's not pretty and my heart broke for her when she remembered. It was like she was going through it all over again.

This book is definitely my favorite of the series and it was worth reading just to get to the epilogue. I almost burst into tears while reading it, which would be perfectly acceptable if I was home alone and not on public transportation!

My Review

I received an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Haven and Heath have a interesting relationship. The love to hate each other. They always have.  So when Haven has to get married in order to keep her inn of course Heath is the perfect man for the job. He agrees in order to keep his meddling mother off his back, but it isn't long before he realizes that he actually wants the marriage to work.

He even goes as far as to woo her, after they have been married. Over the course of a few weeks he does everything in his power to convince Haven that they can make something of their marriage. And despite the fact that at first all they did was bicker, they actually get along. Like REALLY WELL.
“Haven,” he murmured as he came to rest beside her. “That was... incredible.”

She wasn’t sure how to take his compliment and instead of spouting off a random fact about the withdrawal method only having a failure rate of four percent while condoms had a failure rate of fifteen percent, to her horror, tears began to fall from the corners of her eyes.

“Don’t, baby.” He kissed her tears away, cleaned her up, and gathered her in his lap. “I didn’t mean to hurt you. I know it’s been a while for you—I should have gone slower. Should have asked you if you were okay.”

She shook her head, seeking his strength and warmth. “It’s not you. It’s me. I’m crying because that’s the best sex I’ve ever had.”

Lifting her chin with his hand, he stared deeply into her eyes. She half-expected him to say something cocky, like damn right it was, but he didn’t.

Instead, he tenderly kissed her lips and said, “It was the best I ever had, too.”
I really liked them together. Heath was such a sweetheart...especially when he was trying to get Haven to see the truth about their relationship. He was just so damn thoughtful and every preconceived notion Haven had about him was thrown out the window. Unfortunately it takes a serious event for her to see the light, but she does eventually see it. And that epilogue...it just made me so darn happy!!

I love me some Marquita Valentine! The event that occurs at the end of this book sets us up for the next book in this series and I am really looking forward to it. Woman with amnesia who still thinks she is married to her ex-husband?  SIGN ME UP!!

EXCERPT

“Don’t even think about it,” he warned.

She gave him a smile so sweet that it made his stomach hurt, or the sight of her gave him indigestion. “You can have this one if you want,” she said, surprising him with her thoughtfulness. “I can wait.”

Manners that had been drilled into him since birth reared their inconvenient heads. “Ladies first,” he said, giving the cucumber sandwich one last look of longing.

Scooping up the petite sandwich, she took a bite, moaning at the taste. “So good.”

“When will they bring more out?” he asked. If she kept moaning over the food, he would lose it, and not because he was attracted to her. He wasn’t. She was too irritating.

“They’re not,” she said, licking her fingers.

He stared at her. “Did you lie to me?”

“I didn’t mention anything about more.”

“You said you would wait. Wait implies there’s more to come.”

Her silver eyes widened in mock amazement. “They’re teaching you really big words at baseball camp. I’m so proud of you, especially with the way you spelled tickets. Good job.”

His blood began to boil. Why in the hell she’d always felt the need to insult him was beyond his comprehension. “Then you lied by omission.”

“I guess.”

“Why?”

She shrugged, her cotton candy-colored hair sliding over her shoulders. “I really wanted one.”

“So did I,” he all but growled at her. A tic started up in his jaw.

“Guess I wanted it more.” She whirled around, but he reached across the table and grabbed her before she could flounce off with rest of the sandwich.

“You’re not being nice, Haven.”

Over her shoulder, she glanced at him, her eyes flicking up and down his body. Normally, he’d be flattered if a woman who looked like her was perusing him like that, but again… she irritated the pure hell out of him.

“Let go, and I’ll share.”

“Promise?”

“What do you think?” she said, her nose tipping in the air.

He let go of her. “Fine.”

Haven’s mouth twisted up slightly in one corner, like she was up to no good. Which was probably true. Then she picked up the last bit of the cucumber sandwich and popped it into her mouth, closing her eyes and moaning in such an exaggerated way that more than a few heads turned to stare.

“You little—” He took a breath and began again, “You made a promise.”

“No, I didn’t.”

“You said—” He paused. She hadn’t promised him anything. Just asked him what he thought. Damn it. “Fine. You got me. Satisfied?”

She leaned in a little, giving him a glimpse of the tops of her breasts. Very nice breasts. Gorgeous even. He didn’t have to like her to appreciate that fact. He averted his eyes before she could call him out on staring at her. “By you? Yeah, right.”

“We’re getting too old for this, Haven.” They were way too old to be fighting over food of all things.

“Maybe in baseball years.”

“Like that.”

Suddenly, Haven’s expression changed, a friendly smile on her lips. Heath looked around, only to find Leah Ambrose bearing down on them with a determined look.

“Leave,” he said.

“What?” She shook her head, hands fists on her hips. “Don’t tell me what to do at my own—”

“My mother is in matchmaking mode.”

“So what,” she snapped.

“I’m single, and my mother wants all her children… not single. Apparently, I’m the holdout,” he managed say without losing his cool.

“Aw,” she said with a little pout and a whole lot of sarcasm. “Did your baseball bunny hop to another guy with a bigger basket?”

His basket was big enough, but if he even hinted as much, she would tear him down in two seconds flat. “I’m not interested in anyone at the moment.”

“What does that have to do with me?”

Heath glanced over his shoulder. His mom was almost to them, but different people at the reception kept sidetracking her. “I’m sure that big brain of yours can figure it out.” While she just stood there, he rubbed the bridge of his nose and tried again. “You. Me. Together. Date.”

“Oh my word.” A look of horror covered her face. “Why didn’t you tell me in the first place?” Then she hightailed it out of the reception tent and left him to face the one woman he loved to death but drove him crazy, too.

My Review

I received an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Finally a book where the billionaire is....wait for it...A WOMAN! Kate has inherited billions from her grandparents. She knows that she will eventually have to get married and it will probably someone she doesn't really care for...someone her parents will set her up with. But Kate wants to get married on her own terms.

Kate runs into an old acquaintance while she is at a wedding. It has been a few years since she has seen Noah (I'm guessing this happens in the Holland Springs book Just Desserts, which I haven't read yet), but his appearance comes a very good time. The wedding Kate is attending is that of her friend Sebastian...the man that she has been pining after for years. Noah sees that Kate is upset and the two of them leave to go to dinner.

On the way to dinner Kate comes up with a great idea and she asks Noah to marry her. She lays out her plan during dinner and Noah isn't so sure that this is a good idea. But after a run in with the paparazzi, he agrees.

I liked Noah and Kate as a couple. It is very obvious that the two are attracted to each other and what starts as a business transaction quickly turns into something more. The two of them share some sexy moments on their honeymoon and things seem to be going really well, but then Kate's family gets wind of the marriage. They try to undermine her plan and she even starts to agree with their objections. Luckily for her, Noah really wants their relationship to work and he will do whatever he has to to make that happen.

I'm looking forward to reading the rest of this series. The only objection I have is that the stories are all going to be too short and I know I will finish each book wanting more. Thank god I have still have to read all of Marquita's back catalog.

Excerpt

The sound of forks lightly hitting glasses caused Sebastian and Daisy to stop. So did Kate’s heart. They turned to one another, tender smiles on their faces, and kissed. It was lovely and beautiful and made Kate want to sigh a little in happiness.

But she couldn’t.

It felt as though the walls were closing in on her, squeezing her so tightly that she could scarcely breathe. Panic clawed at her insides, and she clenched her hands into tight fists. She would not cause a scene by breaking down in front of everyone, especially over a childhood crush.

Smile. Be gracious. Be kind. Be brave.

She had chanted those words over and over in her head during the entire ceremony. They had become so loud that she couldn’t hear the reciting of the vows, the promise to love and cherish.

Thank goodness.

For a wild moment, the urge to escape this beautiful nightmare nearly made her jump to her feet and run away. She took a deep breath, mentally chastising herself for such cowardly thoughts. Besides, where could she run and to whom?

Someone pulled the chair beside her out from the table and sat down. The scent of a sun-warmed spice with a hint of something she could only describe as male washed over her and her stomach tumbled to her toes.

However, she didn’t have the time to waste small talk on her closest dinner companion, no matter how attractive he smelled, unless he could possibly be the—she bit her lip—this was mortifying.

A light touch on her bare shoulder made her stiffen. “Excuse me?”

Gathering her thoughts, Kate attempted to take a breath and reign in her emotions without anyone becoming any the wiser. “Just a moment, please,” she said softly, pleased that her voice didn’t betray her.

A large hand held out a napkin to her, just in her line of vision so that she didn’t have to turn or look up. “I think you need this,” he said softly.

His voice was low, American and…familiar. It couldn’t be him, could it? She hadn’t seen Noah in ages, not since that night in Holland Springs when he’d charmed her with talk of house building after Zoe and Christian’s wedding.

Noah Sawyer was tall and lean with dark hair and even darker eyes. His face ruggedly handsome, lips full and the most stubborn looking jaw. He exuded confidence and power even while his excitement seemed to make him come alive, and wore a suit in such a way that made her knees weak.

All in all, he was a sexy, charming man who’d made her feel special for one night. Though nothing more had happened between them, it felt as though something had happened. A connection had been made.

Slowly, she turned to him and somehow a smile found its way to her mouth. “It is you.” Warmth filled her, displacing all the nasty coldness that had threatened to lay her bare. She took the napkin from him and clutched it tightly. “Seems we’re always meeting this way…at weddings.”

“Duchess, it’s always a pleasure to see you. No matter the circumstances,” Noah murmured, the nickname he’d give her so many years ago rolling off his tongue in such a way that it made her slightly dizzy. His dark-eyed gaze appraised her before he leaned close. “You look like you could use some fresh air.”

"I don't..." She swallowed. Everyone would see. Everyone would suspect that she was upset and—

"Hell, I could use some fresh air with a beautiful woman. Unless you think I'm suggesting something too improper," he continued on in that whisky-tinged drawl she adored. “Besides, we haven’t seen each other in three years. Too damned long, don’t you think?”

He winked and her heart fluttered. In that moment, she found the answer to her dilemma.

There's still time to sign up for the fun!
