Dimpled smile of a boy
Hard body of a man
Sings like an angel
Fucks like the devil
I was stuck between a rock(star) and a hard place.
At fifteen, his poster hung on my bedroom wall.  At twenty-five his body hovered over mine.  Every girl’s fantasy became my reality.  I was dating a rockstar.  Yet I was slowly falling for another man.  The problem was—the two men—they shared a tour bus.
Flynn Beckham was the opening act.

Dylan Ryder was the headliner.
What happens when the opening act begins to shine so bright, it seems to dim everything else in its wake?
I’ll tell you what happens.  Things get ugly.

My Review

I received an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Are you looking for a new book boyfriend? Do you think rock stars are sexy? How about one that is completely smitten by his adorable 4 year old niece? Then let me introduce to Mr. Flynn Beckham.

Flynn meets Lucky when when he comes into her karaoke bar. Unbeknownst to her, Flynn is an up and coming rock star. His band just landed a huge gig and will be opening up for one of the biggest bands in the world. The two flirt a little and it is obvious that they have a connections, but Lucky doesn't let it go any further since she has a boyfriend. That boyfriend happens to be the one and only Dylan Ryder. the head singer for the band that Flynn will soon be opening up for. Talk about your bad luck.

Lucky comes from music royalty. Her father was once a big star (he has since passed away) and her mother still is. Lucky herself had a promising career on stage until a family tragedy induced a major case of stage fright in her. So she backed away from the limelight, took over her father's karaoke bar, and left the stage behind. As much as she would love to perform again, she just can't do it. She does have a plan though and part of that plan leads to her becoming a vocal coach for Dylan's record label.

When Lucky goes out to meet Dylan on the road, she ends staying because the record label needs her to work her vocal coach magic on the guy who is joining the band temporarily. He has been having from issues and they need to make sure he is okay to perform. She agrees and the temporary replacement turns out to be Flynn. They are quite surprised to see each other and since Lucky is Flynn's vocal coach, the two of them start spending a lot of time together. Not to mention they have a great rapport and seem to enjoy each other's company.

And this is where things start to get complicated.

I can kind of understand why Lucky stayed with Dylan for as long as she did. He is the famous Dylan Ryder. A sexy rock star god. As a kid she daydreamed about him and had his poster on her wall so being his girlfriend is a dream come true. But at the same time, Dylan is not a good boyfriend. He's not very attentive. Yes, he cares for her, but he doesn't love her like she deserves to be loved. Their relationship is way too comfortable. They have been together for a while and they just seem to be going through the motions.

Now Flynn and Lucky...that's another story. Sparks fly when these two are together. Their growing relationship is comfortable, but in a different way. They drink coffee and write music together in the early hours of the morning while everyone is still sleeping. When Lucky tells him the reason behind her stage fright, Flynn completely understands. But while Dylan just wants her to get over it, Flynn wants to help her overcome it. He's also very thoughtful and not afraid to show Lucky the real him. They go birthday present shopping for his niece and spend the day goofing off at FAO Schwartz. He takes her and his niece to a freaking Frozen sing along contest and gets up and sings "Let it Go." COME ON!! Everything about Flynn is just better. God I LOVE him!

While I didn't always agree with the way Lucky handled her relationship with Dylan, it really was a delicate situation. She couldn't just break up with him and then go to Flynn. Flynn's career was at stake and she didn't want to be the reason his band lost their amazing opportunity to be an opening act. I think she did the best she could with the hand she was dealt.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book and I was a bit bummed when it was over. But it did end with a lovely epilogue that made me feel all warm and fuzzy. I love when that happens. This is definitely one of those books that I will go to when I don't feel like starting a new book, but want to read something familiar.

EXCERPT

Getting through Flynn singing is incredibly hard. The way his throat moves, the way his mouth caresses each syllable of the low, raspy sound that falls from his lips. I should be watching his posture, his breathing, the way his larynx forces out the words—but instead I’m focused on the beauty of his mouth and how the sound of his voice glides over my body, making it feel both warm and tingly at the same time. I’m lost when the song finishes, yet I haven’t really observed him yet.

“So. Give it to me straight. What am I doing wrong?”

Ummm…absolutely nothing from what I can see. Everything was perfect. Don’t change a thing. Shit. “Could you do it again? Maybe a different song, one you haven’t sung in a while. So the sounds are less familiar to your body. Sometimes that can give me a different view.” At least I make it sound like a real thing when the words come out.

He sings again, and this time I force myself to observe. “Hmm…your posture is great. Most people have a tendency to favor one side of their neck, which makes them tilt a bit when they speak, and it becomes magnified when they sing, which puts strain on the muscles around the vocal cords. Your alignment is perfect.”

“Thank you, it goes with the rest of my perfectness,” he says with a teasing arrogance that, from the little I know about him, I know isn’t real.

“You didn’t let me finish.”

“You can’t now tell me I’m not perfect. I was already basking in the glow.”

“Actually, it was perfect…but almost a little too perfect. Which makes me think you don’t usually stand this way when you sing.”

“It isn’t the way I normally sing. On stage, I usually have a guitar over my shoulder. Even if I’m not playing it, it’s there.”

“Well, I need to see you holding your instrument to assess you fully, then.”

Flynn’s eyebrows quirk up and the dirty grin on his face is unmistakable.

“The guitar. I’d need to see you holding the guitar.”

“That’s a shame.” He shrugs, the playful smile still on his face. “But okay. It’s your call. Whatever instrument you want to see me hold is fine with me.”

“How big of you.”

“So now we’re talking about the other instrument again?”

I roll my eyes, although this conversation is having more of an effect on me than I let on.
