Series Spotlight: The Corps Security Series by Harper Sloan

With the release of "Unexpected Fate," Harper Sloan is ushering in the new generation of The Corps Security. We now get to read about the children of the group we know and love. Some of them we even met along the way (i.e. Cohen Cage). So in honor of Harper's new release I thought I would highlight the series where it all began.  

I don't think I really understood what "Alpha male" meant until I read this series. The Corps Security men are domineering, powerful, fiercely protective and extremely frustrating, but they are also loyal, funny, passionate, and loving. They would do anything for each other and the women they love and throughout the course of the series, they do. 

I love ALL of the books in this series, but Locke is my favorite. He even made my Book Boyfriend List Part 3. Throughout the series we are given glimpses of Maddox Locke, but never the whole picture. Harper Sloan teased us by showing us how badass he could be, but also the sensitive side of him when you least expect it. He was a man of few words, never really getting close to anyone and and it was obvious he has his own demons to deal with. I had a feeling there was a great story there and I was right. His back story is one that will break your heart, but at the same time you know what he has already overcome so much to get where he is today. And when he does finally allow someone to break down those walls he has built up, it's beautiful. Here's a little taste of why I love him so much: 

He jumps in his seat. Not much though, and if I hadn’t been studying his reaction, I would have missed it. His eyes search mine for a few beats, the uncertainty clear as day. I give him the time he needs, preparing myself for if he rejects me. This is, in a sense, our moment of truth. His jaw ticks and his deep breathing fills the silence. 

I watch his emotions fighting for control, each one playing out in a fascinating display. The fear. Struggle to believe. And the hope that he can. Them, finally, I see them all clear and the acceptance and love take over. 

“My sweet angel,”he finally says on a sob. 

I watch his face as he crumbles and the tears start to slowly fall. “Come here,”I beg.  

He looks at me, lying in a bed that is too narrow for him to join, and appears confused, those tears still falling. I silently signal for him to move forward and he scoots a few inches towards me on his chair. I motion for him to lean over and he does, his face hovering just over the bed. I run my hand from his arm, up his shoulder, then around his neck. His eyes close when my skin makes contact with his, and I pull him towards me until his face is just inches from my own. Two of his hot tears fall and land on my cheeks. His eyes instantly drop to them and watch them fall to the bed. 

“Kiss me.”My request brings his eyes—and their heat—back to mine. 

When his lips touch mine, I sigh and he takes that in. There isn’t anything sexual about this kiss. This is us becoming one—and it’s every bit as beautiful as I knew it would be.

Then a little bit later in the book: 

"I lean over and kiss her softly before I grab her hand, and try to figure out how to tell her how much this means to me. “I love you.”It really is just as simple as that. Her love started it all, and she never gave up until I believed her. “You made me whole again, Emmy. You drove those monsters and nightmares from my soul and replaced them with something so unbelievable that I’m not even sure if I understand the enormity of its power. I’ll never stop fighting to make sure that I continue to be worthy of that love, baby.” 

**SIGH** Now I want to go read it all over again....for the millionth time.
