RELEASE WEEK LAUNCH: Return of the Bad Boy (Second Chance #4) by Jessica Lemmon

Return of the Bad Boy by Jessica Lemmon
Date of Publication: April 26, 2016

He's a mess...

Asher Knight has three constants in his life: music, beautiful women, and a bottle of Jack. He lives for the next gig, the next city, and dreams only of a life spent in front of an arena full of screaming fans. But Asher's nomad ways come to a sudden stop when he learns he's the father of a three-year-old from a past relationship and suddenly this rock star bad boy is forced to put down roots.

Only she can clean up

Gloria Shields is no one's fool. Sure, the sexual chemistry between her and Asher has always been intense, but she'd never risk giving her heart to a man who has a perfect record for breaking them. Except the man desperate to make things right with his newfound son is nothing like the rock god she's guarded her heart against for years. And it isn't long before she starts to wonder if life with this bad boy might be the best thing that's ever happened to her.

EXCERPT

Gloria nodded at Evan, and he and Brice made their way through the crowd—which hadn't thinned even a little despite the band leaving the stage—and walked in the direction of the bar. Gloria figured they'd get back about the time the band took the stage again, which left her with Asher in the interim.

"I didn't realize you were invited," she said over the melee.

"I see that." The corners of his mouth turned down.

"Why did he invite you?" she asked, curious.

"He wants me," Asher said, a bored expression on his face.

"No. He wants me." She pressed her fingers into her chest.

Asher leaned closer to speak to her and it took everything in her not to back away a step. Him close had a way of messing with her equilibrium...even more than the whiskey.

"I meant he wants to sign the band, Sarge. He's probably buttering you up to get to me."

"What?" she asked, slightly offended. "How egotistical are you?"

"I'm not being egotistical," he said. "That's a fact. And you're welcome."

Oh, he was too much. "I'm welcome?"

"Yeah. Now that I'm here, you won't have to touch him. He won't get within three feet of you." Stubble lined his jaw, fire burned in his eyes, and he stood close enough that his body heat blanketed her. "Promise."

"Listen, Asher"—she cleared her throat and tore her eyes away from his biceps, which were absolutely delicious and testing the limits of his T-shirt in the most distracting way possible—"I don't know what you think you're doing—"

"No, you listen." He palmed her hip much like Brice had earlier, but unlike Brice, when Asher touched her, her nipples perked up and every inch of her grew warm. Asher's nearness, one hand gripping her firmly as he looked down at her with dark hunger in his eyes, was so hot she couldn't think.

The crowd milling around them were having loud, drunken conversations, so he lowered his face to her ear to speak.

"I'm coming for you, Sarge." His hand moved from her hip to her lower back, his fingers splaying wide and slipping beneath the material of her shirt. "Bet you've never had anyone come for you, have you?" His nose moved along her ear, warm breath tickling her skin. "Bet you were a rebellious teen with a nose ring and a bad attitude and all you wanted was to feel good."

No nose ring, but the rest was scarily accurate.

"Well, guess what, honey?" he continued, his fingertips sizzling on her bare skin. "I'm going to make you feel good. I'm the only one who can."

He pulled his face away and she had to will her mouth to close. Her teeth clacked together as her brain scrambled to figure out what part she should argue with first. Wrenching a fist around his T-shirt, she tugged him close. A small smile played on his mouth, and his hand went higher beneath her shirt. He was anticipating a kiss, but she wasn't going to kiss him.

"Listen up, you arrogant bastard." Anger vibrated through her arms and a charge shot from her toes to the crown of her head. "You don't get to claim me. I'm not your property. I can do whatever I want." Because she wanted to wipe that stupid smirk off his face, she added, "And I can do whomever I want."

His lips flinched, but he didn't back away, stepping even closer and touching the tip of her nose with his. Her vision was now swimming in dark hair, dark eyes, and the sexiest smirk she'd ever seen.

It's not sexy. It's stupid, remember?

But it wasn't. And the rest of her knew it. Her nipples tightened, her body tingled, and the hand she'd wrapped around his shirt began to sweat . . .

But coming home has land mines of its own-the most dangerous of them being long-legged bombshell Faith Garrett. But Jack Frost has other plans, and soon Faith and Connor are snowbound in a winter wonderland with only the sparks flying between them to keep them warm. As one hot kiss leads to another, they'll have to decide if they're ready to give each other the best gift of all-love.

My Review

I received a copy of this book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

Faith and Connor have known each other for a while now and she has been harboring a major crush on Connor. But having been betrayed by her ex-fiance, Faith is weary about relationships. Connor has always been attracted to Faith, but he knows about her past and doesn't want to push her into anything she is not ready for. It also doesn't help that Connor has some issues himself, the most important one being PTSD from the 4 years he spent in Afghanistan.

When a situation occurs that has Faith needing some extra security at her apartment, Connor gets all Alpha-y and steps up to help. He ends up sleeping on Faith's couch and playing watchdog. She even ends up staying over at his place a few times. But the more time they spend together, the more they cannot ignore the sparks between them. They were already friends, so they had a friendly relationship, but they both slowly realize that it is so much more than that. I mean you could cut the sexual tension with a knife. It was great!

Connor. I loved Connor! He was such a contradiction and I could try to describe him, but Faith said it best:
“How is it that you are a complete badass, who carries a gun, hurdles my balcony, protects me from my ex-fiancĂ©, and yet you have a gentle enough touch to care for dozens of fragile plants?”
Come on! The guy grows award winning lavender, for christ's sake! LAVENDER! He's sweet, funny, caring, loyal, and ridiculously sexy. And I could say the same thing about Faith. They were perfect for each other!

I think my favorite part of the book was when the two of them got snowed in. Faith grew up in an unconventional household and never really celebrated holidays. So after spending Thanksgiving with Connor's family, they are going to spend Christmas together at Donovan and Sophie's place. But a snowstorm intervenes and strands them at the cottage on Donovan's land. It is definitely not ideal, but they make do. Knowing Faith never celebrated a real Christmas, Connor does everything to make this one a great one despite the circumstances. He even manages to get them a Christmas tree and Faith decorates it with some very interesting decorations. They spend their time enjoying each other's company, talking and having hot and steamy sex. Like so steamy they could have melted the snow that stranded them. Maybe not all of it, but definitely a lot of it. The whole thing just made me all swoony.

I just love this series. (All the books are standalones so if you haven't read the previous books, don't worry.) When I read the first book, Bringing Home the Bad Boy, I knew that this was going to be a great series and I have yet to be disappointed. I just want to move to Evergreen Cove and be friends with all of them. I want to take part in girls night and get snowed in with my own bad boy! And I am so glad that we are getting Asher and Gloria's story. In this book the author sets up their story. They have this great love/hate, personal/business, confusing relationship that will surely be entertaining to watch play out. I can't wait!

Jessica Lemmon has always been a dreamer.

At some point, she decided head-in-the-clouds thinking was childish, went out, and got herself a job . . . and then she got another one because that one was lousy. And when that one stopped being fulfilling, she went out and got another . . . and another. Soon it became apparent she'd only be truly happy doing what she loved. And since "eating potato chips" isn't a viable career, she opted to become a writer. With fire in her heart, she dusted off a book she'd started years prior, finished it, and submitted it. It may have been the worst book ever, but it didn't stop her from writing another one.

Now she has several books finished, several more started, and even more marinating in her brain (which currently resides in the clouds, thankyouverymuch), and she couldn't be happier. She firmly believes God gifts us with talents for a purpose, and with His help, you can create the life you want. (While eating potato chips.)

My Review

I received a copy of this book from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.

I'm not gonna lie. I clicked on this book because of the cover. I found myself just staring at it...LOOK AT IT. Yum. Then I read the synopsis and I was SOLD. I am a huge fan of the friends turned lovers story line and I also love a second chance romance. And this book has both! BONUS!

At the beginning of the book Evan and his son Lyon are saying goodbye to their home. They have been living in the house where his wife Rae died and they both need a change. The two of them are moving back to Evergreen Cove, which is where Evan he spent his summers growing.  It is also where Charlotte, or Aunt Charlie, as Lyon calls her, lives.

Charlie was Rae's best friend. She was there when Evan and Rae met and now she feels responsible for both Evan and Lyon. Charlie lives next door and she knows that she will become a big part of their lives, but before she knows it she is not only spending a lot of time with them, but she also starts to experience feelings that she is not comfortable having.

Here is the thing I liked most about this book. This was a story about people moving on after experiencing the death of a loved one. But when it came down to it, the person who is having the most trouble moving on isn't the one you would expect. The phrase "I'm sorry Rae" is spoken numerous times during the book and my heart broke every time it was said. The author makes is clear throughout the book that Charlie feels guilty about having feelings for Evan, but it's more than that.

The other day I was trying to come up with a list of book boyfriends.  Well now I can now add another one to the list...Evan Downey. Thank you Jessica Lemmon. He's a smart, sexy, loving, funny, tattooed, single father. And a force to be reckoned with. I think Charlie says it best when she uses this description to describe Evan:
The man could talk a nun out of her habit. And a good girl into a series of bad ones.
I love Charlie and Evan together. They have known each other for years. Being together as friends is very easy, but Charlie is resistant to return Evan's romantic advances. But when she finally gives in...OH. MY. GOD. The author's writing style is not overly descriptive, but it was just enough to prompt me to do that whole "fanning myself with my hand" movement. I won't give away any details, but I will say that after reading this book you won't be able to think about finger painting without blushing.

I look forward to the subsequent books in this series. This was my first Jessica Lemmon book and I will definitely be reading all the books in this series, as well as her books from the "Love in the Balance" series because Evan Downey has brothers y'all.

I also recommend going to the author's website. If you click on the individual books she includes some fun stuff to go along with it!

Excerpt
“Know why I moved here?” he asked, keeping his voice low.

She wrenched her eyes from his and focused on a spot over his shoulder.

“Because you didn’t want to live in Columbus anymore.” That’s what he’d told her. That he wanted a change. That he and Lyon had outgrown the house. And, she imagined it’d be hard to live in the house where Rae had passed.

“But why here?”

“Um…”

His fingers grazed her jaw and turned her head, his palm moving to her neck where he cupped her nape and forced her eyes to his.

Reluctantly, she met them.

“Rae’s more alive when you’re around, Ace.”

Her heart, oh her heart. Kicking against her chest in a confusing, hectic rhythm.

“You bring her to life for Lyon—more than anyone else. I need him to remember her because he can’t remember her alive.” His hold stayed, his palm warming her neck, his gaze unwavering.

She tried to separate the two feelings she was having—one that she was now talking about Rae with Evan and two, that he was touching her while talking about Rae.

Before she could, his lips closed over hers.

Her thoughts short-circuited.

This wasn’t anything like a soft peck hello. This was his lips moving over hers, slanting over hers, warm and firm and then his mouth opened and—
Oh my gosh!

His wet, warm tongue slid along the seam of her lips and she stopped being passive and started kissing him back. When she would have touched her tongue to his, he relocated it, running along her bottom lip instead and tugging with his teeth.

If she’d been standing, her knees would have given out and dropped her right on her butt.

And then there was the palm on her neck, now spearing up through her hair and clutching onto a handful of it. He held her captive, his hand fisting her hair as he angled his mouth again. In response to the soft whimper escaping her throat, he swept his tongue into her mouth. He tangled his tongue with hers once, twice, and released her.

When he pulled his mouth away, a long, satisfied sigh escaped her lips. Because that was a kiss. A kiss to rival all other kisses.

She opened her eyes to realize A) she’d closed her eyes and B) she’d at some point wrapped both hands around his forearms where she was holding tight and C) Evan looked as please as she felt.

“God damn, Ace. Your mouth.” His eyes flicked to her lips. Lips still tingling from the rough scrape from the stubble surrounding his.

She concurred with that sentiment. Not that she said anything. She’d gone dumb; completely mute.

He backed away, but held onto her chin and tweaked it lightly with the rough pad of one thumb. “That’s the way this is gonna go from now on.”

Her breathing went shallow, her thoughts went muzzy and her head blurred as her heart palpated to the point of panic attack.

“Sorry, Rae.”

She didn’t mean to say it, and it had only been a whisper, but by the look twisting Evan’s face—the angry look twisting his face—he’d heard. And he hadn’t liked what he’d heard.

“Sorry,” she said to him this time. “I should go.”

Unbelievably, he leaned closer. She pulled her chin back until she realized she likely had a double chin, then settled her head on her neck in a more reasonable position.

Gosh. He was making her crazy.
