He was as magnetic as a deadly hurricane to the shore.
Carson Cole was my first love. The boy I'd shared my whole self with.
He was the man who'd taken the other part of my soul and drowned it in the sea we'd grown up in.
And now he's back. Ten years later, and the demons of our past are still haunting every breath trapped between us.
She was as wild as the horses who owned the beach highways we drove down.
Blake Sayer was the beautiful daredevil who had me wrapped around her finger from the time we were seven.
Until a horrible accident stole every piece of joy from her life.
Ten years later, she's a shell of the girl she once was, and it's all my fault. The whispers of our history shackle her to the island I left behind.
Just like lost years and unspoken words, love had slipped from our fingers like grains of sand. We’d barely made it out alive last time, was it even possible to reconstruct the shattered pieces of us?
My Review
I received an advanced copy of this book with the promise of an honest review.
After they both suffer a soul destroying loss, Blake makes it very clear that she never wants to see Carson again. She holes herself up in her childhood home and becomes a fraction of the girl she once was. But now it is ten years later and Carson has come home to run the family business. It isn't long before their paths cross and he is shocked to find Blake in the state she is in. After only a few encounters with her, he knows that the feelings they have for each are still there and he is determined to set things right.
We learn Carson and Blake's story through present events as well as flashbacks. I found the back and forth to be very effective in giving us all the missing pieces of their past. And while they can (kind of) talk about what happened, most of their initial back and forth is about the aftermath of the tragic event and how it affected their lives, so it was great to read about what actually happened. It's absolutely heartbreaking and I cried more than once while reading it.
So much was left unsaid between these two and you knew eventually "the talk" was going to happen. Ten years away from each other, while harboring lots of unresolved feelings is bound to cause some fireworks. Not to mention that Carson has found a way to live his life and leave the past behind him, but Sayer has imprisoned herself in a cell full of loneliness, hurt and guilt. And all Carson wants is to help her live again, preferably with him by her side. (I freaking LOVED him!)
This is such a gorgeous book. It is a story about love, loss, and most importantly, second chances. I highlighted so many passages throughout the book that I could relate to and even made a graphic out of one (see below). Also, the location of the book played a BIG part in the plot and I found myself so fascinated by it. It takes place on the Outer Banks of North Carolina and now all I want to do is go there. I honestly can't remember that last time I read a book and thought that.
Carrie has definitely become one of my go to authors. Her books have quite the range when it comes to their subject matter and I can't wait to see what she gives us next.
Author of romance novels such as Red Card and On Thin Ice, Carrie Aarons writes sexy, swoony and sarcastic characters who won't get out of her head until she puts them down on a page.
Carrie has wanted to be an author since the first time she opened a book, and can’t imagine a better or more maddening profession.
When she isn't in a writing coma, Carrie is chasing her Great Dane/Lab puppy through the dog parks of New Jersey, or trying to make her husband binge watch the latest Netflix craze.
