The author of Flirting with Scandal presents her third book in a sexy contemporary romance series about three sisters in a powerful political family, the scandals that threaten to destroy them, and the passion that drives them…

Kate Reynolds has just graduated from college and is determined to make it on her own. Her job as a junior political analyst at the CIA is a dream come true and the perfect opportunity to find answers about the night that’s plagued her for four years—the night she lost her fiancé, Matt, on a Special Forces mission in Afghanistan. Kate’s consumed with uncovering the truth and avenging the man she loved and lost, even if it means risking her own life to prove that his death wasn’t an accident.

When she gets too close to discovering what happened that fateful night and danger arrives on her doorstep, Kate’s stunned by the man who comes to her rescue. Together, they begin to dig for the truth, fighting to stay alive as they’re dragged down into a world of secrets and lies. But when the threat hits close to home, Kate must choose between vengeance and a future with the man who’s ignited a fire inside her that she thought died long ago.

My Review

I received an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.

DISCLAIMER: This review is a little spoiler-y. So if you haven't read the book just be aware that I am going to say some things that may spoil parts of the book. If you don't want to be spoiled just know that I loved this book and can't recommend it enough. Go buy your copy and read it today!

Everything about this book is amplified. The love story seems more intense. And the storyline is WAY more intense than anything that happened in the first two books. While those books kind of touched on the idea of political intrigue, this book dove right in and showed us the worst of the worst.

We learn in the prologue (which I absolutely LOVED and gave me all the warm and fuzzies) that Kate and Matt grew up together. Kate always had feelings for Matt, but never thought that he felt the same way. On Kate's 16th birthday Matt told her that he loves her and everything between them changed. During Kate's freshman year of college the two of them get engaged, but then Matt shocks everyone by quitting his job at this father's company to join the Army. Unfortunately that decision would change everyone's live in ways they could never imagine.

After Matt's death, Kate became obsessed with trying to figure out what really happened. After overhearing her father and Matt's father in conversation, she starts to wonder what really happened to Matt and four years later she is still trying to find out. Kate has been getting classified information sent to hear periodically from an unknown source and that just fuels her investigation. She is determined to figure things out no matter how dangerous it can get. After hearing someone break into her apartment, Kate's world gets turned totally upside down:
I gripped the front door, pulling it open, when all of a sudden—
“Kate.”
I froze, my hand slipping from the doorknob, the sound of my name hitting my body like a blow.
Oh my god.
Oh my god. I knew that voice. Had heard it say my name hundreds of times. Thousands of times.
I told myself it was the stress of the night catching up with me, that it couldn’t be what I thought it was, hoped it was. I told myself to keep running, to call the police, told myself not to turn and face the intruder in my apartment.
It can’t be.
I struggled to calm my breathing, to keep it together, when suddenly I felt like I was falling apart.
My hand left the knob, the baseball bat falling from my other hand, my body turning as the power of memory beat out any fight-or-flight response I might have had.
It was dark in the apartment—too dark to see anything but a shape looming in my open bedroom doorway. A strangled gasp escaped my mouth.
He was tall. Just like Matt had been.
Broader than Matt, though.
It can’t be.
And then I heard that voice again. “It’s me. I’m not going to hurt you.”
My body sagged against the front door. This had to be a dream. All of this. Maybe I was still sleeping.
He began walking toward me, slowly, nothing menacing in his stride. He approached me without a sound, gliding through my living room like a ghost. With each step, he sucked the air out of the room.
My throat clogged with unshed tears, my entire world reduced to each step he took. And then he was in front of me, and I looked up, up, and stared at the man standing before me, searching for some sign that I wasn’t crazy, that this wasn’t a dream.
That it really was him.
I blinked, for a moment wondering if I was wrong, if I’d just walked into a trap and gotten myself killed. His face was covered in a dark beard, his hair obscured by an even darker ski cap. Up close, his body was even bulkier than I’d previously thought. His mouth was slanted in a hard line, nothing like the teasing smile I was used to seeing on the boy I’d loved and lost.
He reached out and I flinched.
Maybe this was it. Maybe Blair was right and I’d totally and completely lost my mind.
But he didn’t kill me.
Instead, his fingers curled around the gold chain at my neck, his hand grazing my skin as he touched the little gold disc with my initial etched on it. The one he’d given me six years ago. Our gazes connected and I stared into familiar dark eyes—
I stared at a ghost.
SURPRISE! Matt is alive!!! From that moment on, Kate's life turns into a political thriller novel. Explosions. People being shot at. People being stabbed. Having to go into hiding. Murder. Ya know...just another day in Washington, DC. Meanwhile, while all this is going on, she is trying to figure out if she has a future with the man she never stopped loving.

Matt is a changed man. He has been through a lot in the last four years and at first glance he is not the man that Kate once knew. He's hardened. Distant. He is adamant that there is no future for them and insists that he is only there to make sure that Kate is not harmed. But as they continue to investigate the curious circumstances of Matt's "death," what they discover hits a little too close to home. Kate enlists the help of her sisters and they all work together to take down those involved. (It was nice to see all three sisters work together to take down the man they all grew to despise. We didn't get a lot of that in previous books.)

While the story is mostly about Matt's "death" and trying to figure out what actually happened four years ago, underneath it all is the fantastic love story of Matt & Kate. Despite Matt's protests, it doesn't take long for Kate to realize that the old Matt still exists. And as much as Matt thinks that he can't be the man that Kate needs, she manages to convince him of the opposite. The two of them together just felt right. They both still loved each other so much and Kate was exactly what Matt needed to heal and move on with his life.

The love story combined with the political aspect of it made the book that much more interesting and I couldn't put it down. I love this series and am a little sad that it is over. The first two books were fantastic, but for me, this one is the best. It was a fantastic way to end the series and one I will be rereading in the future.

Now, a happily ever after later, Chanel is living her next adventure. Law school made Chanel realize she’d rather spend her days writing sexy stories than in a courtroom, and she hasn’t looked back since. An avid reader and hopeless romantic, she’s happiest curled up with a book. She has a weakness for handbags, her three pups, and her husband.
