Review: Garrett by Sawyer Bennett (Cold Fury Hockey #2)

Synopsis

Carolina Cold Fury star Garrett Samuelson never wants to miss out on a single minute of fun. Whether he’s playing hockey, hanging out with friends, or walking the red carpet with a new date on his arm, he lives every day to the fullest. When he meets Olivia Case, he sees someone who’s exactly his type—confident, sexy, smart . . . his next fling. But the more he pursues her, the more Garrett shares a side of himself that other women don’t normally get to see.

Olivia has been keeping a secret. While Garrett lives for the next thrill, Olivia’s not sure she’ll live to see the next day. She’s undergoing treatment for some serious medical issues, and she doesn’t have time for a relationship with no guarantees—especially one with a hot-as-sin womanizer who won’t take no for an answer. But as she gets to know the real Garrett, Olivia can’t help falling for him . . . hard. To reveal the truth would mean risking everything—but you can’t score without taking the tough shots.

My Review

4 1/2 stars!!

I received a copy of this book from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.

Garrett. Garrett. Garrett. I freaking love this guy.  He meets Olivia and is instantly attracted to her. He asks her out and gets turned down, but then Olivia changes her mind. They go out and Garrett quickly realizes that he likes Olivia way more that he likes her way more than the thought he would. She surprises him by bringing him home and having a hot and steamy night together. For her it is a release. A way to forget her troubles. But for both of them it quickly becomes more than that.

Here is the main reason why I love Garrett so much. When he finds out about Olivia's health problems their relationship is purely casual. They basically go out and then have sex, but it was clear after their first night together that he was already developing feelings for her. And luckily Alex is more than willing to point that out to him:
“I mean . . . I’ve asked you dozens of times if you’ve fucked a woman that you’ve gone out with, and you always admit that you did. You may not kiss and tell all the deets, but you share with me and anyone else that cares to listen. But this time . . . you wigged out. Went all caveman, protective of Olivia. Dude . . . doesn’t matter if you fucked her or not . . . it’s clear you don’t want anyone even thinking about her in that way. You just told me all I need to know. You’ve got it so bad.”
When Olivia tells him that she is sick, he immediately steps into the caregiver role. He even takes it upon himself to find out more information about her illness. Throughout her treatment Garrett becomes a vital part of her support system. It's quite obvious that he loves her, so it makes her actions so frustrating.

Luckily Alex returns the favor from when Garrett gave kick him a good kick in the ass in the previous book. He pays Olivia a visit and sets her straight:
“He changed for the better after meeting you, because that’s what love does to you. It happened to me with Sutton. And the thing that impresses me the most about Garrett is the amazing strength and fortitude he has shown. I don’t know of any other man that would have done what he’s done . . . stood by your side, made you a priority, given you strength to help fight this."
I look forward to the next book in this series. Hopefully we will get a glimpse into how these two are doing as well Alex and Sutton. Book #3 is going to be about fellow Cold Fury team member Zack. The tragedy that strikes Zack in this book played a big part in the crappy decision Olivia made so I am curious how to see how Zack himself handles things.
