EXCERPT

Her motion activated lights cast faint shadows near the house, but the light didn’t nearly reach the back of the yard. She searched the dense brush along the back, saw movement and fired a warning shot into the air, then another.

She heard the rustling of an animal scurrying away then the sound of leaves crunching and twigs breaking behind her and to her left. She swung around, gun raised.

“Jesus!”

“Nope, just me.”

Dallas stood just a few yards away, stock still, chest bare, in a dark shade of boxer briefs and his hands up in surrender.

“That’s a good way to get shot.” She lowered the weapon. “Sorry.”

He took a step forward toward the faint light she stood in. “I thought you were getting shot. What the hell are you doing?”

“Scaring away whatever was snooping around the chicken coop. Raccoon maybe, or a fox.”

“I guess you know how to use that?”

“I do.” Her lips twitched. “I have a permit and everything, officer.” She lifted the butt a few inches off the ground.

Still looking distressed, he rubbed the heel of his hand up his forehead and into his hair.

“I’m sorry if I scared you. And woke you up.” Obviously, because again, he was standing there in his boxers and…yeah. Just boxers.

“You didn’t wake me. I was outside. With my popcorn.”

“Do you always come outside in your underwear to eat popcorn?”

“I burned it.”

“Ahh.” She grimaced. “That’s a bad smell. Guess you weren’t kidding when you said you couldn’t cook.”

“Mmm. Is this a usual thing?” he asked with a nod to the gun, closing the distance between them even more. “Scaring away predators?”

“Oh. Every now and then. I lost one last year.” She kept talking, kept looking at the man. Her gaze skimmed over a muscled chest, sculpted arms, over a tattoo on his upper right bicep that she couldn’t make out.

“Holly’s not much of a guard dog,” she went on. “But her hearing’s still good, so when her ears perk up I know something’s amiss. Were you coming to save me?”

“I didn’t know what I was coming to do, but I heard gunshots and—”

“And you came bounding over. I hope you didn’t um…scratch anything.”

Dallas glanced down, winced, then looked back up. “Nah. I’m good.”

Uh, huh. Well. She forced her attention up to his face and not on the dark boxers that hugged his thighs…annnnd… she was staring. How could she not?

But when her eyes finally met his she saw he was staring too. And it dawned on her that she was also barefooted and in her underwear. She tugged the tank top she slept in, stretching it until it covered the juncture between her thighs.

“Well, I…uh…”

A cool breeze rippled over her and she shivered. Or maybe that was the man now just a couple of feet away giving her chills. What had she been about to say?

And when had he gotten so close? Or had she? Just an arm’s length apart now and she found herself imagining all kinds of things. Like what would she do if he moved closer? If he touched her?

The feeling changed like a coin flipping from heads to tails and even with the cool wind she felt hot. It was uncomfortable and also layered with a ripple of nervous excitement. Standing in her backyard at night with a man—this man. And both of them barely dressed.

When Holly barked from inside the back door, she glanced toward the house. When she looked back, the moment was gone. “Guess I should go back in. Holly’s probably worried.” She shifted the gun hanging at her side.

“Probably so,” he said. “I’ll get myself back. Finish airing out the house.”

“Yeah. Maybe try another bag. Listen for the popping. More than a second between pops and it’s done.”

“Yeah. Okay.”

He still wasn’t moving and she swallowed hard. Had a ludicrous thought of asking him in. To make popcorn. To watch Downton Abbey?

He nodded toward her house. “I’ll wait until you’re inside.”

“Oh. Right. Thank you.” She turned, went inside, locking the door behind her. It’d been a long time since she’d been in the position for someone to care about her getting safely inside. She had to admit it didn’t totally suck.

My Review

I received an advanced copy of this book with the promise of an honest review.

Dallas!! <insert heart eyes> I just love him so much. The last of the Walker brothers to get a story...he's also the one we know the least about. His work has kept him away from his family, but now he is home and ready to start a new chapter in his life. When he moves into his new house, it turns out his neighbor is someone he has crossed paths with. Maggie keeps to herself and the last thing she wants is a friend, but that is what happens.

Maggie and Dallas' friendship starts slowly. Dallas can see that she is holding on to something that keeps her from forming relationships with people. But Dallas has his own baggage that he is dealing with, so he respects that. Plus he was an undercover cop....he has all the patience in the world and is willing to wait for Maggie.

This book is very sweet with a bit of sexy thrown in. Maggie and Dallas have fantastic chemistry and I loved them together.

I really do love the Walker/McKinney family. They are so supportive of one another and always willing to help, even if the other person doesn't think they need it. These books are definitely ones that I will reread when I am looking for something comforting.

4 Star Review: Waiting For You (McKinney/Walker #2) by Claudia Connor

When ER nurse Nora Sellers is hurt in a hospital scuffle, firefighter Zach Walker blames himself. Blaming himself is nothing new. He’s been blaming himself for years for the trauma his baby sister endured as a teenager. Though with his happy–go–lucky attitude no one would know it. He’s good at his job, he’s a good brother, and a good friend, but Zach decided long ago he wasn’t husband and father material.

Even so, when Zach learns Nora is a single mother with a house that needs his help, he can’t walk away. After a few days with Nora and her ten month old son, he knows he doesn’t want to.

But Nora’s wary. She learned at a young age that the only person she can count on is herself. Now with a baby, a job, and a fixer–upper house, the last thing Nora wants is a sexy firefighter, making her heart flutter. But Zach is more than what he seems, and the more she gets to know him the harder he is to resist.

She’s been brave all her life. Can she be brave one more time and take a chance of a lifetime with her heart?

My Review

I received an advanced copy of this book with the promise of an honest review.

Zach and Nora meet while they are both on the job. She gets injured and he blames himself, so he takes it upon himself to make sure she's okay. Nora is a single mom and is new town, so she doesn't really know anyone. When Zach realizes that she lives in a fixer upper he finds himself going around to her house and fixing things for her. He wants to help, but he also enjoys her company and loves her little boy. Before they know it, the two find themselves spending a lot of time together.

I loved Zach and Nora. Their relationship is a slow burn that had me sitting there thinking "OMG JUST DO IT ALREADY!" Nora is hesitant to put a label on things, but she finds herself attending family events and being accepted into the Walker/McKinney clan with open arms. But the two of them were so good together. Zach had no problem stepping in to help work on the house or take care of her son. Zach actually formed almost an instant bond with the little guy and it was so cute!

One of my favorite things about this book was when Nora was hanging out with the Walker/McKinney clan, especially Matt  & Abby. Those two will always be me favorite and it was great to see them again. We also got to meet Zach's brother Luke for the first time! He's finally home and we get his story next. I can't wait!

If you are a McKinney/Walker family fan, then this is definitely a must read!

5 Star Review: Love at Last by Claudia Connor

With her ex-groom's words, I'm in love with someone else, still ringing in her ears, Clare Franklin flies off alone to her would-be honeymoon. Forced to accept not everyone gets that happily ever after she's always dreamed of, she's done with men. Until she gets tangled up, quite literally, with one sexy veterinarian.

The only thing Dr Deacon Montgomery wants is to share his surgical expertise and get back to his two year old twin daughters. But, the connection he feels with Clare highlights just how alone he really is and makes him wonder if he can be more than doctor and daddy.

Long talks and moonlit walks under the rustle of palms has Clare thinking maybe she gave up on love too soon. Until one phone call from home changes everything.

My Review

I received an advanced copy of this book with the promise of an honest review.

Clare is on her honeymoon, but without the groom. She’s determined to relax and just enjoy herself. Deacon is on a work trip and can’t believe his luck when he meets Clare. A single father of 3 year old twins, he rarely has a change to take some time for himself. The two decide to live in the moment and enjoy each other’s company while they can with the stipulation that they only talk about what is happening at that moment. No talk of their lives at home. Which sounds like a great idea, until they both realize that what they have goes way beyond a vacation hook up.

Unfortunately for Claire, Deacon has to leave in a hurry and doesn’t get to properly say goodbye. That results in a misunderstanding that not only upsets Clare but also makes her return home complicated when a life changing event happens. Meanwhile Deacon is having a hard time forgetting about Clare. Once they are apart they’re both realize that their time together was special in a way that neither of them expected.

One of the things I enjoy most about Claudia’s books are the children. She has a knack for writing children. I always find myself laughing at their antics and Deacon’s little ones were so adorable and I had no problem picturing exactly what was happening in the book.

I know that when I pick up one of Claudia’s books I am guaranteed an emotional, sweet, romantic story. Her characters are relatable and I almost always want to be friends with the female characters. And then by the end I’m ready to go out and find my own single dad who also happens to be a hot veterinarian. I should have no problem finding one, right?

Did you miss what Titan World is all about? Here's a recap from Cristin herself:

I am excited to announce the Titan World stories! From military romance and romantic suspense to contemporary romance and paranormal, a few of my favorite authors have jumped head first into our heart-pounding world and penned their stories with Titan twists. You will see familiar characters from popular, bestselling series as they collide in fantastic collaborations! Plus I’m excited to introduce two debut authors who you may already know if you are familiar with all things Team Titan.

Please join me in welcoming the Titan World authors: Claudia Connor, Gennita Low, Jessie Lane, M.L. Buchman, Megan Mitcham, Sharon Kay, Karyn Lawrence, Amber Addison, Anna Bishop Barker, and Tarina Deaton.

Quick Q&A

Am I writing a story too? You betcha! Déjà vu will be Doc Tuska’s story. He’s not a Titan team member, but he is a familiar and constant face in the series—perfect for Titan World!

Which Titan characters will be in the other author’s stories? The authors had free rein. Some took on Titan like missions while others wrote backstories to characters and expanded on their families. They took scenes from current Titan books and expanded in a new direction.

What is the reading order of the Titan World? There is NO READING order (Even if one of the retailers has randomly assigned a series number. Ahem, I’m looking at you, Amazon.).

Okay, now on to the good stuff! You can order your books here:

Excerpt

~twenty-four years ago

Nick pressed two fingers into the sleep deprived headache pounding in his temple and tried to concentrate on professor Jenkins’s explanation of ideal gas law. He circled a line of notes, ignored the knock on the auditorium door until he heard the familiar cry. Hannah, who he’d left in the university daycare two hours ago.

The high pitched wail wasn’t his two year old sister’s hurt cry. It was her scared cry with a touch of pissed off. In the six months since their parents’ death, he’d learned to tell the difference. He’d learned a lot of things. Like if he didn’t take her to the bathroom, she’d likely wait too long and have an accident. Like green beans made her throw up, but she’d eat them if he told her to. And she would never, ever go to sleep without Mr. Bunny.

He was up, out of his seat, and halfway down the auditorium stairs before his professor laid his pen down.

Nick’s eyes narrowed on the young blonde in an oversized sweatshirt with silk greek letters sewn on the front. She held a sobbing Hannah dressed in the sunny yellow sundress he’d picked out that morning. She hadn’t been crying when he left her. Now her eyes were red and snot mixed with tears dripped into her mouth. Hannah lunged for him. His arms engulfed her small body and his heart squeezed like it always did when she held onto him.

“I stay you,” Hannah said. Each word tumbled out of her with a jerk of her tiny shoulders.

“What happened to her?”

“Nothing happened to her. She hasn’t stopped screaming for the past hour and she bit three people. We can’t keep her like that.”

Several responses came to mind.

She’s just a baby.

She missed her nap.

And the loudest of all, it was my fault for leaving her.

Hannah raised her head to look at him, giant tears hanging from golden lashes. “I bite.”

“Well. At least she’s honest.” Professor Jenkins turned his questioning eyes to Nick. “She yours?”

He hesitated, but only a second. “My sister. But yes, she’s mine.” And at that moment she became even more his, which seemed to be the case every day. Every day, a little more his.

My Review

I received an advanced copy of this book with the promise of an honest review.

Talk about a swoon worthy hero. Holy crap. I have been on the edge of my seat waiting for Nick Walker's story pretty much from the moment that he was introduced. This book is told in present time and in flashbacks. We knew that Nick raised his sister, but now we get the story from his point of view. The excerpt below is one of many flashbacks that will make your ovaries hurt and want to actually go into the book, steal Nick and make him yours. SORRY MIA.

Nick met Mia when he was in college and Hannah was just two years old. After accidentally dumping the contents of his backpack on the ground, Mia was there to help him. A couple days later they met again and Hannah instantly took a liking to Mia and vice versa. It doesn't take long before she becomes a part of the Walker family. It stays that way for years until tragedy strikes and Nick shuts Mia out leaving her feeling like the only thing she can do is leave. Now it is years later and unbeknownst to Nick, Hannah has reconnected with Mia. When they finally come face to face, old wounds, as well as old feelings, are reopened and they have to decide if they can forgive and forget their past in order to move on.

While they were away from each, they both went through a lot. Mia is trying to get over a heartbreaking loss that has shattered her already fragile heart. This subplot broke mine and made me sob on more than one occasion. Before Nick came back into her life Mia was handling it on her own. She wasn't handling it well, but she was doing her best. When Nick discovers what is going on he wants to help, but she's not sure she can trust him. Meanwhile Nick is still getting over what happened with Hannah and holding on to her a bit too tight. He is also carrying around lot of guilt and blame where blame should not be placed. Nick and Mia have a lot of emotional scenes, both good and bad, but that is what brings them back to where they belong...with each other.

Nick and Mia's story is an emotional one that will make you laugh, cry and leave you wanting more. I just loved this book so much. We also got some insight into Nick's relationship with not only Hannah, but also his brothers. After the death of their parents, Nick took on the role as head of the family and that didn't always go over well. But there are these sweet moments with the Walker boys and young Hannah that melted my hear and make me look forward to reading their stories. And of course there is that overlap with Hannah and Stephen's story (HI MATT & ABBY. I LOVE YOU GUYS!) so we get to see it from a different angle. I knew that Nick was unhappy about the relationship, but now we got to see it from his side. While reading Worth the Risk I found myself chuckling at Nick's banter with Stephen and this book was no exception, especially in the very EXCELLENT epilogue. I got so excited when Claudia announced that Nick would get his own book and I was not let down.
