Title: After We Fall (Take the Fall #3)
Age Group: Adult
Genre: Contemporary Romance
Release Date: April 26, 2016

A tough cop with an even tougher past, Hunter Sloan has never let anyone stop him from getting what he wants—and he wants Evangeline Ambrose bad. With her gentle curves and raw vulnerability, Hunter’s beautiful, mysterious new neighbor awakens his protective side. Determined to do right by a woman who’s gone through hell and back, Hunter could be the one to take away the pain—so long as his own secrets don’t sink their relationship before it begins.

Having escaped an abusive marriage, Evangeline simply wants to start over in the small, quiet town of Forrestville. She’s also avoiding all contact with the opposite sex, because she just can’t trust her instincts when it comes to men—not even with the sinfully sexy cop next door. So why can’t she stop thinking about him? Hunter has darkness in his soul, and yet no one ever made her feel so safe. For all her best laid plans, Evangeline didn’t count on choices this hard—or temptation this hot.

EVANGELINE

The pounding of shoes on the pavement makes me glance to the side. The sight of my neighbor makes my heart speed up without my permission. I suppose I can blame it on his lack of clothes. On the way his chest is freaking glistening in the sunlight. On the way there’s a dark trail of hair that disappears under the waistband of his running shorts. Or even the hair on his chest—not too much and not too little.

His mouth is set into a determined line and the muscles of his thighs are clearly defined beneath the material of his shorts as they pull tight across them. A part of me wants to continue to make a study of him, or even compose an ode to his biceps, but that girl is long gone.

My soon-to-be ex-husband beat her out of me.

Like me, he’s not wearing any sunglasses, and the moment his gaze locks on to mine, I freeze, like a deer caught in the headlights. My stupid legs won’t move, not even to get into the shade my body craves.

His lips curve into a smile as he slows. “Fancy meeting you here.”

“Lucky me,” I grumble. The old me would love the way he looks at me, but the new me, the wiser me, doesn’t trust him as far as I can throw him. Based on his size, it wouldn’t be very far at all.

“Are you a runner?” he asks, as if I haven’t been purposefully rude.

I stare at him for a moment. While I don’t have time for any man, this man did rescue me. This man took me to a safe place. He didn’t lay a hand on me, didn’t tell me it was my fault or ask what I had done to make my husband mad.

“No, I—”

“Damn. You’re bleeding.” His gaze drops to my legs.

“What?” I manage to gasp before he grabs my arm and begins to pull me to one side. It’s not rough, but it’s not what I want. Sheer terror slams my body, nearly forcing me to my knees, but I refuse to cave. I refuse. “Let go of me.” The words sound barely human.

Immediately, he lets go of my arm. There is concern on his face, enough that I start to calm down. “I’m sorry. I should have asked first.”

I rub the spot where he’d touched me, but I’m not sure if it’s to rub his touch away or in. “Yeah, you should have.”

“I really should have. Again, I’m sorry. It won’t happen again.” He’s serious, sincere, and genuinely concerned, I realize.

Swallowing down my pride and embarrassment, I nod. “Thanks. My knee is fine. I ran into a flamingo to avoid getting bulldozed by strollers.”

His mouth quirks and his eyes crinkle at the corners. Despite his intimidating size and overprotective manner, he has nice eyes. Warm eyes. They’re the color of the forest behind my parents’ farm. Penn never had warm eyes, never had eyes the color of warmth. His were icy, cold . . . colorless like a glacier in the shadow of the clouds.

Then again, hindsight is always twenty-twenty. I could be just as wrong about the man standing next to me as I had been about the man who stood in front of me while he vowed to love, honor, and cherish me.

“You attacked a defenseless bird?” he asks, pulling me from my head.

“No.”

His dark brows draw together, as if he’s questioning my story. “It attacked you?”

Flustered at the line of questioning, I snap, “It was stationary. Look, I wasn’t breaking the law.”

“You were trespassing on Paula Case’s yard.”

My jaw drops. “You saw that?”

“Yes.”

“I’m pretty sure it’s against the law to spy on people.”

“You were in plain sight.” He crosses his arms over his broad chest, muscles rippling. I can’t help but stare. The tattoos on his biceps and at the top of his hips don’t help things. “My eyes are up here, gorgeous.”

My mouth opens and closes a couple of times even as my gaze snaps to his face. “I wasn’t—”

“You were.”

Yeah, I totally was. “Don’t call me gorgeous.”

“Wouldn’t have to, if you’d give me your real name.”

I flush hot. “You already know who I am.”

“Fine.” His lips flatten. “My eyes are up here, angel.”

That was not the response I was expecting. Actually, I don’t know what to expect at all. I don’t know how to act around men anymore.

“My name’s not angel.”

“It was either that or demon.”

“Are you kidding me?”

“No.” Uncrossing his arms, he rubs the back of his neck with one hand. “Pretty hard to make demon out of the name Evangeline, but not for lack of trying.”

“You—you . . . arg!” I can’t say anything to that. I don’t know why I’ve engaged in conversation this long with him as it is. “Stay on your side of the street, Hunter.”

A slow grin appears on his face. It’s both sexy and infuriating. “Yes, ma’am.”

With a little growl, I check both ways before storming across the street.

“You forgot to look right again,” he calls out. “That’s not very safe, angel.”

“I got your angel.” I flip him off, uncaring who sees me. Uncaring that he’s a cop who could probably find a reason to arrest me for being a jerk to him.

His laughter follows me almost all the way back home.

My Review

I received an advanced copy of the book in exchange for an honest review.

We were first introduced to Evangeline in When We Fall. She was a resident in the women's shelter where Piper worked and Hunter was the police officer that brought her there. It is now six months later and Evangeline is transitioning out of the shelter and into her own apartment. And that apartment just happens to be right across the way from Hunter. She tries to play off the fact that they have met before, but Hunter isn't having it.

Hunter has this overwhelming urge to protect Evangeline and he can't really explain it.
It’s been six months since I last spoke to her. One hundred and eighty days since I last saw her battered and bruised face. Four thousand, three hundred, and twenty hours since I last touched her vulnerable body. Not that I’m counting. I shouldn’t count. I shouldn’t think of her at all.
Yet . . .
Over the years, I’ve escorted countless women to shelters, but none have affected me on the same level as she did. Not a single one. I can’t get her out of my head. Can’t stop wondering if she’s safe, if she’s back with her sadistic husband , or if she’s lying dead on the side of the road.
When he discovers that she is now his neighbor, he finds that this may be the perfect time to get to know her better. Of course Evangeline is wary of him. Not only because he saw her at her worst, but she knows she is not ready for another relationship. She is just now slowly getting her life back together. Evangeline gets a job at the local animal shelter where she forms a friendship with her other neighbor Saylor (whose book is next!). But Hunter and Evangeline do become friends. Luckily for her, Hunter shows up at times when she needs another person to help her through and their friendship slowly becomes much more than that.

I loved Hunter and Evangeline. He completely understood why she was so wary to be anything more than friends and he was willing to stick around until that changed. He was sweet, caring and there for her on more than one occasion when she needed a friend and only a friend. But eventually their relationship does turn romantic and it turns out Hunter is exactly what Evangeline needed.

I look forward to reading Saylor's story. She was such a quirky character and was a great friend to Evangeline. She gets paired up with Hunter's friend Hayden and I can't wait to see how that unfolds.

EXCERPT

HUNTER

It’s late when I get home, but since it’s August, the sun hasn’t completely set yet. Orange and yellow lights filter down through the huge leaves in the front yard. For once, the small parking lot to the right of the building is filled. All six spots taken.

Looks like someone finally rented the last apartment available. It just so happens to be the one across from mine.

My apartment is one of six in a huge mansion built in the early 1900s that was recently converted. It’s quiet. Peaceful. People are friendly but aren’t all up in your business.

All in all, it’s the perfect place. Though this neighborhood doesn’t hold the best memories for me. I’d gotten into a lot of fights. Fights with other kids and the man who couldn’t keep his hands off my mom.

I think that’s why I had to come back—to face my demons. To show the people who do remember my family and me that I’ve done something with my life. That I am one of the good guys now, that I’ve stopped fighting to stay alive to be a man who fights against crime. Like a superhero. Only without the cool costume or billions in the bank.

Two out of three isn’t bad.

Just as I step onto the brick path that leads to the side entrance, I get a glimpse of a woman with light brown hair. She’s attempting to balance moving boxes while unlocking the door.

For no logical reason, my heart speeds up. I jog over to her while calling out, “Hey there. Need some help?”

“Gosh, yes,” she says with a laugh that makes my groin tight. Now this in an improvement. I can’t see her face, but if that laugh is enough to make me stand up and take notice . . . my imagination runs wild. Maybe I don’t have to get her out of my head after all.

I pick up a couple of boxes. “Hey, I’m Hunter, by the way.”

“Nice to meet you. I’m Evangeline,” she says, turning to face me. Her body freezes—only for a moment or two—but it’s long enough for me to notice.

Besides, I’d recognize those gorgeous blue-green eyes anywhere. “I know who you are.”

“You do?” She scrunches her brow as if she’s deep in thought. “I’m sorry that I can’t say the same.”

“Maybe I’m mistaken.” Maybe the pope will get married tomorrow. Taking the boxes, I wait for her to open the door.

Another peal of laughter has me rock hard in two seconds flat after it leaves her mouth. “I have one of those faces. Last week, at the grocery store, someone mistook me for Scarlett Johansson. She’s filming a movie here, so . . .”

The only thing the woman in front of me has in common with Scarlett Johansson is the fact that they are both female. I don’t know why she’s pretending like she doesn’t know me, but what I do know . . . She’s a damn liar.

The woman standing in front of me is Evangeline Ambrose, the same woman I haven’t been able to get out of my head for months. The same woman I escorted to a battered women’s shelter. The same woman I had no business asking after.

“What a coincidence, someone mistook me for her, too,” I reply drily.

She blinks up at me, her mouth twitching at the corners, but she doesn’t laugh again. I know it’s because she sees the serious look on my face.

“You’re not that pretty,” she says, giving me a whole other side to her. One I like.

“Most women think I am,” I disagree. What the hell has just left my mouth?

Walking in front of me, she leads the way to her apartment. “Good for them. You, too.”

As she begins to ascend the stairs, my gaze goes right to her ass. The faded denim cups her just right as it stretches with her movements.

“Lived here long?” I ask, trying to keep my thoughts aboveboard, or above her plump ass anyway.

“Nope.”

That’s all she says until we arrive at her apartment. If I weren’t carrying these boxes, I have no doubt she would have run from me by now.

She stops in front of a blue door and unlocks it, before turning to me. “I can take it from here.”

“I’m happy to help you. It’s in my job description.”

Her lips part, and the urge to kiss her rides me hard. She’s so damn pretty. So delicate. What man in his right mind would ever try to harm someone so much smaller than himself?

A man like your father, that’s who, I remind myself.

“You’re the onsite manager?” she asks with false cheerfulness. “How nice.”

I can’t believe she’s going to continue this lie. I know it’s a lie. She knows it’s a lie, and she has to know that I know it’s a lie.

“Nope,” I reply, hoping that my answer grates on her nerves as much as hers did mine. “Not the manager.”

“Okay, then.” She nods, opening the door and taking the boxes from me. “Thanks again. Maybe I’ll see you around.”

“Count on it,” I say with a grin, and walk to the door directly across from hers.

“Dream on,” she mutters loud enough for me to hear.

Oh baby, I don’t have to dream.
“What are you doing?” she practically screeches.

“Going home.” Glancing over my shoulder at her, I unlock my door. “That’s what I do each day after work.”

“But you can’t.”

Turning around, I cross my arms over my chest. “But I can.”

“No.” She shakes her head, her chin becoming mutinous. “I refuse to—” She smashes her lips together and whirls around, slamming the door behind her.

“Nice talking to you,” I say, loud enough to reach her ears. I know she won’t answer me, but I can’t help but push her. I want her to open the door and acknowledge me. To tell the truth, actually, and admit she knows exactly who I am.

That I’m the guy who helped save her life.
