BLOG TOUR & 5 STAR REVIEW: The Close-Up by Kennedy Ryan

The Close-Up, an all-new moving second-chance novella set in the Hollywood Renaissance/HOOPS world from New York Times bestselling author Kennedy Ryan and 1,001 Dark Nights is available now!

I met Nazareth Armstrong when I was eighteen years old. From the beginning, my brother warned me to stay away from him. Told Naz to stay away from me.

Our hearts didn’t listen.

I shared one magical night under the stars with my brother's rival, thinking it was the start of a once-in-a-lifetime something.

But one awful moment ended it all.

Years later when we meet again, we’ve both pursued our dreams, lived a little, found success…but never found love. What began as a tiny flame when we were young now threatens to consume us. I’m more drawn to Naz than ever, but his complicated history with my brother makes whatever this could be…nearly impossible.

But Naz accepts impossible as a dare.

Through his clever maneuvering and dogged determination, I find myself on a yacht with him and his friends cruising through the Mediterranean. It’s a whirlwind set ablaze. Away from reality, surrendering to the tender heat of his touch, I forget that everything could burn.

*This is the love story of Takira, who first appears in Reel, book 1 of the Hollywood Renaissance series. Characters from the HOOPS series also make appearances, but you do not have to read any of those books to enjoy this one.*

**Every 1001 Dark Nights novella is a standalone story. For new readers, it’s an introduction to an author’s world. And for fans, it’s a bonus book in the author’s series. We hope you'll enjoy each one as much as we do.**

My Review

I received an advanced copy if this book with the promise of an honest review.

Naz and Takira had ONE night together. And to be honest, it wasn't even a full night. It was just a few hours. But it was during those few hours that they formed a deep connection. Unfortunately for them life got in the way and now they find themselves reconnecting years later.

I. LOVED. THEM. SO. MUCH. It was clear that when Naz and Takira found each other again, that the feelings were still there. And I loved how Kennedy kind of "forced" them to reconnect by putting them on a yacht with friends who were definitely pro Naz & Takira. It gave them time to reconnect and get to know the people they grew up to be.

I got so many warm and fuzzies while reading this book. Naz was so in tune with Takira's needs and he just wanted to take care of her. (see the excerpt below.) And Takira let him. It's just all so good. *sigh* And don't let the warm and fuzzies fool you...some scenes had me reaching for a fan to cool off. This book is sexy as hell!

And with it being a crossover, there are plenty of familiar faces that make an appearance in this book! I always like when that happens because I love to see characters still living their HEA.

Keep reading for a look inside The Close-Up!

Naz has abandoned his cabin completely and has spent every night over the last week with me. Why front? He brought me here, and we can’t get enough of each other. I’m glad we’re on this yacht with a bunch of couples who also can’t get enough of each other because we’d be pretty obnoxious otherwise.

He’s rich as hell and could shower me with material things. And he does. At every port, I find some keepsake from the local shops he’s left for me in the room—an ankle bracelet, clips for my hair, diamond earrings. There has been no shortage of gifts, but the real gift has been his attention. The way he cares. The man bathes me. He wraps my hair up at night. He washes my face. I don’t know what this is, but I feel spoiled. Doted on. Adored. At first I was like…is this cringe? Is it weird? But then I recalled all those times when I didn’t feel valued in a relationship. All those times a guy disrespected me by looking at other women all night. All those times I didn’t feel this almost embarrassing amount of single-minded focus from a man who’s determined I’ll know how much he enjoys me. How much he likes me. Cherishes me, even. He’s constantly pulling me onto his lap. We sneak away from the group anytime the mood strikes us. Last night at dinner, he fed me from his plate.

From his plate.

Who am I right now?

I’m that girl, living out a fantasy on a half-a-billion dollar yacht floating on dreams along the coast of Italy. Forget Black girl magic. This is pure sorcery, and if it’s a spell, we’re both under it.

“Good morning, darlin’. Could I interest you in some breakfast sausage?”

The woman turned, her long, dark curls swinging around her shoulders. A look of disgust quickly washed over her face as her eyes locked on my bulge.

“Ay dios mio, you’ve got to be f#cking kidding me,” she muttered, immediately taking her briefcase from the counter and marching to the front door, her red-bottomed heels clacking loudly on the hardwood.

“What’s the matter?” I asked, stumbling after her.

“Last time I do a favor for a friend,” she said under her breath, slamming the front door shut behind her.

Favor. Friend. Beautiful woman in a pencil skirt. Charlotte’s hotshot lawyer friend from Los Angeles.

Oh f#ck.

“Hey, uh, Valencia, wait up!”

I burst through the door to find her paused on the top step of the porch. She turned sharply to look me dead on, the fire in her eyes enough to burn me straight through.

“It’s Valentina,” she spat, crossing her arms and cocking her hip to the side.

“Valentina, right. My mistake. Listen, I’m really sorry about all this. We were out late last night for—”

“For the opening, I know. I was supposed to be there, but something came up at work. So instead, I got my ass onto a last-minute redeye to make it in time for our meeting this morning, but clearly you had other things in mind,” she said, her eyes flitting to my quickly-softening cock before turning again to leave.

“No, please, don’t go. This is completely unprofessional, I know—”

“That’s the understatement of the century.”

“But I promise, if you give me a chance, we can turn this meeting around.”

“Is it still a meeting when one person shows up with his dick out?”

“Oh, trust me, sweetheart, if my dick was out, you’d know it.”

“Sure, as long as I brought a magnifying glass with me.”

I paused, standing up a little straighter. She squared her shoulders, and our eyes locked, the tension between us thick enough to cut with a knife.

If we were going to make this work, I knew I had to be the one to budge. But dammit if this woman didn’t make me want to blow my lid.

“Look, I’m sorry. Please stay. If not for me, then for Luke and Charlotte.”

Valentina sighed and put a hand on her hip.

“Fine. Put some goddamn pants on first, and then we’ll talk.”

You have to marry her.”

Rip Savage stared at the man who’d been like a father to him over the past year. Even now, with worry lines bracketing his eyes and mouth, the older man retained a sense of elegance and grace befitting someone of English descent, even royalty. With his thinning silver hair, thick black framed glasses, and penchant for designer black suits, he cut an intimidating figure, even before one stared into those pale blue eyes that could turn steel grey with stubborn defiance. Of course, Edward Winsor had a reputation to live up to. Within the cliques of vineyards and winery owners in the Hudson Valley, he was well known for his quality vintage and a tightly knit family-run business that competed with Brotherhood Winery for the oldest run winery in the state. His estate was small but mighty, and one of the sought-after blue-bloods that many admired.

Rip had been the only one to know Winsor Winery had been almost bankrupt. Beneath the flawless surface, something rotten had flourished. When Rip was hired to pull the business from ruin, he’d been focused on success no matter what the cost. He hadn’t expected to develop such affection for Edward, or be treated like a son rather than a hired associate.

Therefore, instead of panic, he regarded the older man from across his cherrywood desk with a frown. “I don’t understand. What does Caterina have to do with the winery?”

Edward gave a long sigh, tapping his elegant finger against the etched crystal highball glass that contained his usual two fingers of Scotch. He shifted his weight in his chair, causing the leather to squeak slightly. They were in Rip’s favorite room—the library/study—decorated in bold, rich wines with a hint of Tuscan gold. The fabrics were decadent, from the expensive dark leathers to the Oriental tapestry rugs, and burgundy velvet couches. Bookshelves lined the wall, the scents of old paper and leather bindings with a touch of wood polish drifting in the air. The large bay windows overlooked the acres of rolling property with the view of the spectacular Shawangunk Mountains.

Usually, the view alone soothed him. Reminded him of his success and how far he’d come in a world he’d fought to break into. But his nerves were edged with a fine tension that matched his gut. Something bad was going down, and he had a terrible idea he wouldn’t be able to stop it.

Jennifer Probst wrote her first book at twelve years old. She bound it in a folder, read it to her classmates, and hasn’t stopped writing since. She took a short hiatus to get married, get pregnant, buy a house, get pregnant again, pursue a master’s in English Literature, and rescue two shelter dogs. Now she is writing again.

She makes her home in Upstate New York with the whole crew. Her sons keep her active, stressed, joyous, and sad her house will never be truly clean. She is the New York Times, USA Today, and Wall Street Journal bestselling author of sexy and erotic contemporary romance. She was thrilled her book, The Marriage Bargain, was ranked #6 on Amazon's Best Books for 2012. She loves hearing from readers. 4 Star Review: Rough Rhythm (Made in Jersey #1.5) by Tessa Bailey

God help the woman I take home tonight.

Band manager James Brandon never expected to find the elusive satisfaction he’d been chasing, let alone stumble upon it in some sleezy Hollywood meat market. Yet the girl’s quiet pride spoke to him from across the bar, louder than a shout. Troubled, hungry and homeless, she’d placed her trust in him. But after losing the grip on his dark desires that one fateful night, James has spent the last four years atoning for letting her down.

This time I’ll finally crack him.

Rock band drummer Lita Regina has had enough of James’s guilt. She wants the explosive man she met that night in Hollywood. The man who held nothing back and took no prisoners—save Lita. And she’ll stop at nothing to revive him. Even if it means throwing herself into peril at every turn, just to get a reaction from her stoic manager. But when Lita takes her quest one step too far, James disappears from her life, thinking his absence will keep her safe.

Now it’s up to Lita to bring James back…and ignite an inferno of passion in the process.

Reader Advisory: ROUGH RHYTHM contains fantasies of nonconsensual sex, acted upon by consenting characters. Readers with sensitivity to portrayals of nonconsensual sex should be advised.

My Review

I received an advanced copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

James has needs. Needs that he is ashamed of. He and Lita meet on a night when he wants to give in to those needs. Lita is homeless and needs a place to go. She goes to a bar to find a guy to go home with and that is when she meets James. They go to his hotel, spend the night together and before she knows it she is in a band and James is the manager. It is quite clear from the moment they meet that they have a connection.

Despite the fact that they may want a repeat of their night together, that never happens. They never even talk about that night. James makes sure their relationship is strictly business, but Lita is not having it. She's constantly putting herself in positions that require James to bail her out and after four years of playing rescuer, he's done. James leaving is the breaking point for Lita and she makes it her mission to bring him back. For the band and for herself.

We got a little taste of James and Lita in the previous book and I knew there was a story there. But holy crap, I wasn't expecting this story! I loved Lita. She was so kick ass and when she made up her mind that James was going to be hers, I knew that she would make it happen. Unfortunately for her, James is a difficult man and he doesn't make it easy. Thanks to events from his past, he truly believed that he wasn't good enough for Lita. Those were the moments in the book where my heart broke not only for James, but also for Lita. She loved him and wanted to make a life with him, but the man was so darn stubborn.

This book is intense. And please pay attention to the disclaimer. It's there for a reason. But this book is also SUPER hot and like most of Tessa's books, you will need to either take a cold shower or change your panties. Or maybe both.

EXCERPT

“You came along at an unfortunate time, Lita.” His head gave a tight jerk, jaw clenching. “I haven’t been feeling like myself.”

“Really.” She set the donut down, her stomach executing a series of flips. Nervous ones, but not the type that made her want to run. Not the type she’d experienced before. These were hotter, fuller, curious. “How do you feel…instead?”

“I have hunger.” His dark gaze swung up, gluing her to the plush, leather seat. “I don’t know if it can be fed like yours.”

What was going on here? Lita felt almost hypnotized, lured in by his rasping, cultured voice. She recognized interest and arousal in men, had it directed at her often, but this? This was utter famishment. He reminded her of a vampire who’d been in hiding from the sun, unable to hunt. And now a deer lay before him, vital and tempting, life flowing through its veins. She was the deer.

Man. How crazy were her thoughts right now? The lack of food must have gone to her head. After the trouble she’d just escaped, she shouldn’t care what went on under another man’s surface. Shouldn’t allow this odd, instantaneous attachment to take hold.

The fuller her stomach became, though, the more her thoughts cleared. The more of James she saw. His interest in her, as he watched her mouth chew, was almost as thick as the leash around his neck, keeping him in place. If the lights in the room weren’t so dim, she could probably make it out. Strain bracketed his masculine mouth and he appeared to be swallowing golf balls down the column of his powerful throat. One…after…another.

“How did you get so hungry?” James asked, his tone suggesting he was reclining back onto a bed of nails.

Lita rejected the outside ugliness from entering the room. “I could ask you the same thing.” Her legs were steady as she stood and rounded the table, compelled by some force she couldn’t deny. Maybe it was his clear attempt to restrain himself, to fight the attraction so obvious between them. She stopped beside James, but he stayed still as stone. “I’m full. What happens now?”

His eyelids drooped, fist mashing against his forehead. “Go.”

That single, tortured word caught her in the chest. God, he was holding back so much. What would happen when it roared out?

Why was she trembling with the need to find out?

There was danger lurking beneath this man’s surface. Also known as the last thing a homeless girl wanting to turn her luck around needed.

Too bad danger was the only thing that had ever made her feel alive.

Lita walked past James to the lamp and flipped off the gentle light, before returning to his tense figure, sliding between his outstretched legs…and opening the robe. “Feed yourself.”

The air crackled as James stood slowly, so slowly, rising to his full height. When Lita glimpsed his changed expression, she realized that—at her invitation—a change had snapped through him like a cracking whip, despite the way he rose without hurry. The vampire’s dirt nap had officially ended and the invisible leash was no more. Power rippled over his beautiful body as it pressed close, a hand finding her hip inside the robe, squeezing, his mouth sliding against her ear.

His breath went choppy after issuing a single unexpected command.

“Crawl.”

Connor Dunkle stood on her doorstep.

With a rush of relief, she flung open the door and held back a gasp.

My God, he looked good.

Struck mute for a moment, she gave in to impulse and hungrily took him in. Dressed in a button down navy blue shirt that clung to his broad chest, a casual jacket, and dark-washed jeans, he simmered with delicious masculine testosterone. Usually a hint of stubble clung to his square jaw, but tonight he was clean-shaven and smelled of spicy cloves. His thick dirty blond hair fell in waves over his forehead, brushing his ears, and those sea blue eyes framed with thick lashes struck her mute for a few seconds. He towered over her in a mass of rock-hard muscle, giving her the impression of both strength and protectiveness.

He was a walking, talking specimen of everything a woman dreams of in a man. Both Hemsworth brothers mixed with Daniel Craig and a sprinkle of old-fashioned Redford. Her poor body roared into overdrive and she felt a damp rush of moisture between her thighs.

God, she was acting like a sex-starved teen. So. Embarrassing.

Finally, he spoke. Even his damn voice was gravel and satin mixed together in a symphony to the ears. “I saw your lights went out. Looks like some of the other houses on the block are affected. You okay?”

He was checking on her? To be nice or to get her to agree to extra credit? “Yes, we’re fine. Thank you.”

“Did you flip the breaker? Sometimes these apartments get overloaded and you need to reset it. That’s what I had to do with mine.”

“I haven’t gone down to the basement yet.”

“I’ll help you out.”

“Oh, you don’t have to.”

His gaze sharpened on her face, and his jaw clenched. Fascinated, she studied his features, noticing the air of irritation that briefly shone. “I want to, Ella. I won’t stay. I just don’t like the idea of you and Luke alone in the dark.”

She flushed and stumbled back. “I didn’t mean to be rude. I’m just used to doing things for myself. I’m sorry, come in.”

He walked inside and she realized it was a mistake.

1001 Dark Nights Surprise Announcement!!!

1,001 Dark Nights is proud to present…The Liliana Hart & Friends - MacKenzie Family Project!

A Message from Liliana Hart:

Dear Readers,

I’m thrilled to be able to introduce the MacKenzie Family World to you. I asked five of my favorite authors to create their own characters and put them into the world you all know and love. These amazing authors revisited Surrender, Montana, and through their imagination you’ll get to meet new characters, while reuniting with some of your favorites.

These stories are hot, hot, hot—exactly what you’d expect from a MacKenzie story—and it was pure pleasure for me to read each and every one of them and see my world through someone else’s eyes. They definitely did the series justice, and I hope you discover five new authors to put on your auto-buy list.

Make sure you check out Troublemaker, a brand new, full-length MacKenzie novel written by me. And yes, you’ll get to see more glimpses of Shane before his book comes out next year.

So grab a glass of wine, pour a bubble bath, and prepare to Surrender.

Love Always,

Liliana Hart
