My Review

I received an advanced copy of this book with the promise of an honest review.

You may remember Zoey from the previous book in this series. She is Lainey's (FYI...lot's of hilarious Lainey cameos in this book) roommate and is just as sassy.

When we meet Zoey, she is set to meet her client at the run down resort that she is to renovate. Initially she assumes that she is to meet the client himself, but finds herself facing the last person she wants to see. Especially since she is stuck in a window. Yes, stuck in a window.
Just as the initial sting of tears invaded my vision, the distant sound of gravel crunched from the direction of the parking lot. Thank the lord, my savior had arrived.
I could play this off as a total accident, right? Maybe bribe him not to tell Jason?
A tall, broad-chested figure limped down the path on a pair of crutches, and my stomach bottomed out.
Shit.
It looked just like…no…it couldn’t be.
My pulse pounded triple time in my temples as the crunch tap crunch tap crunch of gravel under his tread drew closer.
“Zoey?” a low, gruff voice asked.
No.
I’d recognize those wide shoulders anywhere. The backs of my legs knew them intimately.
Ryder. Freaking. Covington.
Okay, Chewbacca. Any time now. Sink those fangs into my leg and end this Valentine’s Day from hell already.
Ryder stopped a few feet from the window, looking like he’d seen the Ghost of Christmas Past coming to bite him in the ass.
“Yup. It’s me,” I said.
He quickly recovered, his lips curling into a smile I’d once found charming. “You know, there’s this thing called a door. Some people use it to go in and out of buildings.”
I flipped him off. Immature? Most definitely. I blamed it on the blood rushing to my head. And the fact the one-night stand I had with him was the reason for my current string of sexual encounters of the lackluster kind.
He’d ruined me, in the worst way, for all other men. I hated him.
He chuckled and the deep bass of his voice shook down my spine. “Fair enough. I deserved that. What are you doing hanging out of the window?”
“I’m stuck.” Understatement of the century.
“I figured.” He hesitated, looking unsure. “Want help?”
My first instinct was to blurt out “go to hell!” I didn’t need a goddamn thing from this person who single-handedly ruined my sex life. It was petty and I knew it, but a girl could only go so long on crappy sex before she started to feel a little stabby.
I instinctively reached to pull my skirt lower with one hand, and hit glass. It was up to the clothing malfunction gods at this point whether or not this day could get any worse.
“You want to keep burning a hole through my head or do you want me to help you?”
“Fine. But if you touch anywhere besides clothed areas I’m going to put my stiletto through your skull, capisce?”I managed to keep my voice authoritative and firm, nothing like the shakiness flowing through my body. That was how being around Ryder had made me feel from the first time we met—like I’d just come off an intense adrenaline high.
He put his hands up. “Wouldn’t dream of it.”
I sunk back down and rested my arms on the sill, waiting to be sprung from the window. I prided myself on being selfsufficient, never needing help from others, especially dirtbag hookups. And yet here I was.
He moved closer until the soft fabric of his faded shirt brushed against my arm, and I bit back a gasp. His rich cologne mingled with his detergent, and my eyes rolled back in my head at the heavenly scent. Most men that I’d dated smelled good in that dude-musk sort of way. Ryder took it to a completely different level, one that induced visceral reactions such as drool and the sudden need to find something to do with my hands, anything so I didn’t fist his shirt.
Within seconds, he had the window open, and a firm hand wrapped around my hips. A wave of goose bumps bloomed across my skin as he pulled me down, depositing me on the gravel path, supporting me with his arm. I wobbled unsteadily in my heels and looked up at my ex-hookup, and the breath rushed from my chest like I’d actually taken a physical blow. Ryder stood there, henley pulled tight across his muscled chest. The color matched his ocean-blue eyes. He’d traded his clean-shaven face of a few months ago for a neatly trimmed beard that ran along his chiseled jaw. Which, let’s be honest here, the whole light-eyes dark-hair thing did it for me. A lot. I might dislike the guy, but holy hell, he’d gotten even hotter since I’d last seen him. He looked over me, assessing, and then quickly bent down and swatted my leg.
“Ow! What was that for?” I retreated a step, stumbling as I rubbed at the spot he’d hit. When my fingers hit a squishy mound, it took every ounce of self-control not to dry heave. “You killed Chewbacca.”
Zoey has good cause to not want to see Ryder. He up and left Zoey's bed without a second thought and never gave her an explanation. But now they will be working together and she will have to put her anger and attraction aside in order to not only get the job done, but to also stay professional.

I loved Ryder and Zoey as a couple. It may have seemed like they weren't going to be a good match, but the complimented each other so well. I loved that Ryder had to work to get that first date and when he got it, how ridiculously sweet he was. Zoey gave it her best shot to not give in to Ryder, but she knew that resistance was futile. And when push comes to shove, Ryder makes the ultimate decision to show Zoey that he is ALL IN. Absolutely amazing.

I love Jennifer's books. They are always such a fun, delightful read. This book is no exception. And I'm now wondering if Ryder's brother Jason is going to get his own book. There is a moment when the brothers are having a heart to heart and Jason drops some knowledge that makes me think that he has his own story. Fingers crossed that we get to know more.

My Review
I received an advanced copy of the this book in exchange for an honest review.
This story starts off with some of the worst words in the English language: smear, secrete, pustule, damp and the worst of all the words, moist. **shudders** And what kind of respectable media outlet would even use those on purpose? That's probably the only rule I agree with.
What rules? The many rules listed in the Starr Media handbook. The same handbook that Lainey has found herself reading on the second day of her new job. She is the assistant to the assistant of Brogan Starr, the man in charge. Jackson, the first assistant, tells her that employees refer to him as the Antichrist and that little bit of knowledge leads to a hilarious interaction (see the excerpt below) between Lainey and the man himself.
But despite the awkward introduction, Lainey and Brogan form a good working relationship. It's obvious that they like each other, but there are strict rules about that kind of thing, especially since he is her boss. After Jackson pawns the dog walking duties off on Lainey, she ends up at Brogan's apartment. He is none too pleased to see her there, but he goes along with it. Lainey finds herself at Brogan's apartment almost every day and sometimes he is actually there. They find themselves in some interesting situations where they get to know each other outside the office and that line between friends and the boss/employee relationship gets REALLY blurry.
I really liked Lainey. She was a little spitfire and despite getting off to a rocky start at her job, she eventually manages to settle in and not only make friends, but is able to show off her skills. The one thing I absolutely loved about her was her inner monologue, especially when it came to Brogan. Holy crap she was funny. Here are just a few of my favorites:
There was a lot to be said for a man in a well-fitted suit. Such as yum, and I’d tap that like a friggin’ maple tree.
On a scale of aww… how cute to there’s no way that’s fitting, it was the Goldilocks of bulges. Just right.
That’ll be five ass-smacks for your disobedience. “Oh no, I’m so sorry, Mr. Starr. I’ve been such a very bad girl. Please punish me with those big, strong hands of yours.”
I want to jump your bones , and, does this massage come with a happy ending?
So good.

I liked Brogan too. I expected him to be this uptight jerk, but he really wasn't. Yes, he put all those silly rules in place, but they were there for reason and he truly believed that if he was to have a successful company, they needed to exist. But once he met Lainey, he found himself breaking some of those rules. Unfortunately for him, when a security breach causes one of their social media accounts to post photos that should never see the light of day, he questions everything he has with Lainey.

I really liked this book. It was fun to watch Brogan and Lainey's relationship develop, especially since the way it started. Throw in some coworker workplace drama and the fact that Lainey is also dealing with her sick mother and you have an emotionally charged book that will make you laugh and maybe even cry a little bit.

EXCERPT

I sat down at the table and unwrapped the Panini and frowned. Breadsticks would have hit the spot. Although, no amount of breadsticks was worth giving up a steady income, not even Luigi’s. Still, I gave a spiteful glare to my sandwich.

Just in time to take me out of my garlic grieving, someone walked into the break room. The first thing I noticed was his hair. You could tell a lot about someone based off the length and style. And the clean-cut, lightly-styled golden brown hair that the guy in the plain black tee sported spoke volumes. It said “I look like I’m not trying too hard, but I carefully crafted this look of perfection for at least fifteen minutes this morning.”

The second thing I noticed was this guy should be reamed for violating the dress code policy. Not that I was complaining—because, really, those tatted biceps deserved to be on full display at all times.

I mentally catalogued everyone I’d spotted during Jackson’s drive-by office tour. He most definitely wasn’t part of that whirlwind of name-drops, because I’d remember those high cheekbones. And those tattoos. His arms were covered from each wrist with intricate markings, disappearing under the sleeve of his T-shirt. Some were words, some were pictures I couldn’t quite piece together without creepily staring at him. Decidedly, all were hot as hell.

He smiled at me and walked over to the water cooler. He procured a teabag from his pocket, plopped it into his black coffee mug, and filled it with water. The glug glug glug of the cooler cut through the silence, and I quickly swallowed my bite of turkey sandwich, preparing myself for if this guy wanted to talk—unlike the last five people who took one look into the break room, saw evidence of human life, and booked it to the elevator before I could even manage a hello. For people working at a social media agency, they were oddly…antisocial.

“You’re new here.” It was a statement. One that held the suggestion that this happened more often than my purchases from ShoeBinge.com. I’d deleted the app from my phone the minute I learned Mom’s diagnosis a month ago and was still thinking about those rhinestone heels.

“Second day.” I smiled. Finally. Someone to talk to. Besides Jackson and his awesome ability to give the evil eye over his computer screen.

“How are you liking it so far?” The muscles in his bicep bunched together as he took a sip of his tea. Ovaries, meet arm porn, your new best friend.

I folded the wax paper of my sandwich wrapper in half and creased the seam with my thumb. “It’s been nice. I made it through the employee manual…finally.”

“Learn anything good?”

I looked up from the wrapper and eyed him. “You’re breaking the dress code in at least two ways.”

He looked down at his clothes and then back at me, smiling. Two dimples indented his cheeks, and I realized how incredibly unfair it was that someone could be that gorgeous and not airbrushed by professionals in a magazine.

“Guess I am.”

“You’ve met the boss. What’s he like? Uptight like that rule book?”

His lips tipped up in one corner as he regarded me with his piercing brown eyes. “I don’t know if uptight would be my first choice.”

I chuckled. “Really? I hear he’s called the Antichrist.”

His brows rose. “Oh, really. That one’s new to me.”

“Huh.” I fiddled with the wrapper. “Jackson said it was a pretty well-known nickname around the office.” Maybe the guy worked in a different department than everyone else. Heck, he was a lot nicer than all the other employees I’d (not) talked to yesterday and today.

He let out a loud laugh that echoed throughout the break room. “Very interesting. Thanks for the heads up.” He grabbed the string to the tea bag and absentmindedly dunked it in the water. Veins corded deliciously up his arms and my brain went into zombie mode. Except instead of my inner monologue chanting must eat brains, it was must touch veeeeeeeins. “What’s your name?” he asked, bringing me out of my stupor.

I cleared my throat, heat tingeing my cheeks. “Lainey Taylor. Newly appointed second assistant to the Antichrist.”

Mr. Dimples mashed his lips together, and I couldn’t tell if the glint in his eyes was because he was amused or slightly annoyed. Maybe a bit of both. Great, I guess I was back to square one with making friends here. He backed toward the door and leaned against the frame. Really odd. Where I came from, people tended to give their name after someone else introduced themselves. This guy? Nada. I doubted 200 exits up the I-5 corridor were enough to see a shift in social customs.

He bit down on his full bottom lip and looked like he was really enjoying this awkward silence that had me squirming in my seat. I balled up the sandwich wrapper just to give my hands something to do. Really, these people needed to work on their social skills. Where was the welcoming committee? Mental note: start welcome committee if one doesn’t exist.

“It’s really nice meeting you, Lainey,” he said.

He put his hand on the doorframe, and just before he left the room, I called, “Do I get your name?”

“You can call me the Antichrist.” And with that, he breezed out into the hallway and disappeared into his office.

My heart screeched to a halt, and that turkey Panini turned to a solid brick in the bottom of my stomach.

Shit.
