My Review

I received an advanced copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

I love soccer. It is one of my favorite sports and it makes me so happy that authors are writing more books about soccer players. I read Katie's previous books and really enjoyed them, so I was excited to see that she was wrote this one and I was more than willing to read it!

Nicole is a hotel bartender who works to support her and her autistic brother. She never sleeps with a guy more than once and she sticks to that rule. James is a professional soccer player whose nickname is the "Play Maker" thanks to his moves both on and off the field. These two are absolute pros at one night stands and from the moment they meet, it is inevitable that they are going to be spending the night together. The sexual tension between them was about as thick as it can get and I couldn't wait to see what happened between them. And WOW...what a night it was. Turns out they enjoyed it so much, that they decide to do it again. But remember, neither of them "do relationships." Right.

I loved Nicole's relationship with her brother Mikey. She has been taking care of him for a while now and they are very close. Mike loves Doctor Who (This is second book I have read recently that featured Doctor Who and I am liking it! Keep it up authors!) and the two spend lots of time rewatching episodes and talking about them. Mikey has specific needs that Nicole has to attend to and everything she does, she does for him. While the men in Nicole's past couldn't handle the fact that Mikey came first in her life, James embraces it an makes sure to include him when he can. And the two connected (Thanks to James' appearance in a Doctor Who special) on a level that not even Nicole was expecting...talk about swoonworthy.

As James and Nicole spend more time together, it is obvious that they like each other and even though they are continually breaking their self imposed rules, they just can't seem to stop. They enjoy each other both in and out of the bedroom. One of my favorite moments in the book was when Nicole got to see him play in a game. She got to see another side of him and it definitely worked in his favor:
The game began and I strained forward in my seat, looking for James among the players that rushed onto the field. It took a moment before I spotted him and damn, he looked good. I had seen him in jeans and shirt, in a suit, but I had never seen him in his uniform. It made me want to stand up and cheer. Which I did, because that’s what everyone else was doing. But probably not for the same reason.
I was especially fond of the shorts, which showed off his amazing legs, his muscles flexing with each step. His jersey made the most of his broad shoulders and narrow waist, his tattoos peeking out from the sleeves. And that smile. It seemed to light up the whole damn place.
He jogged across the field, waving at the crowd. He was so incredibly sexy. As was the confidence with which he handled the ball.
The game began and I was spellbound. James sped across the field, the ball a blur between his feet. The mechanics of it seemed otherworldly, how could he move so quickly and gracefully and get a ball from one end of the field to the other? I surged to my feet, cheering with the crowd as the ball he kicked sliced through the air and slammed into the goal’s net. They played hard and I could see the sweat along James’ forehead as he raced across the field, maneuvering around other players, the ball an extension of his feet. He controlled it so effortlessly, the only indication of his concentration was the expression on his face. The only time I had seen him so focused was when we were together. Doing other things that worked up a sweat.
“He’s really good, isn’t he?”
Yes, yes he is. And on so many levels.

As a couple, James and Nicole were amazing. In the beginning, their relationship was purely physical, but it didn't take long for it to turn into something very real. Sure, they had a extremely smokin' sex life, but they also connected in a way that neither of them had experienced before and that scared both of them. Then add on the fact that James is coming to a crossroads in his career and has to decide how he wants to proceed and whether or not he wants Nicole to be a part of that post soccer life and you got yourself an awesome book!

My Review

I received an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.

I thoroughly enjoyed Katie's first book Game On, so I jumped at the chance to read her new book. And when I saw that cover....WOW.

Ella is a professional pianist. She has just moved out of her teacher/ex boyfriend's apartment and is living on her own for for the first time in her life. She is preparing for a very important competition and needs to focus. She feels that living on her own will help with that.
Jake is the head chef at a successful local restaurant. He lives upstairs from Ella and tries to play the role of disgruntled neighbor when her piano playing wakes him up. But one look at Ella and Jake is quite taken with her.

The two of them get off to a rough start, but a batch of brownies changes everything! After Ella tells him that she doesn't really like food and he tastes are very plain and ordinary, Jake pretty much makes it his mission to change that.
Jake is able to convince Ella to go on "one date" with him and it's a great date. Of course one date turns into two and then three and before they know it, they are dating.

I just loved Ella. As someone who loves classical music and sings in an amateur choir that often sings Mozart, Haydn, or Schubert I appreciated Ella's commitment to a genre that most people easily dismiss. ESPECIALLY since her family were all jazz musicians. There is a moment in the beginning of the book where Ella is explaining to Jake why she loves to play classical music and I think fell a little in love with her just like Jake did.
“Most people don’t understand how rich and interesting classical music is,” I told him.
He raised an eyebrow. “Oh yeah?” he asked, sounding way too inviting.
Usually I would just end the conversation there, accepting that most people would never understand what was so special about classical music, but I heard my thoughts tumble out of my mouth in a long, passionate rant.
“Maybe it’s not as cool or exciting as pop music or rock and roll or even jazz, but it has an incredible history and remains just as vibrant and affecting as it did hundreds of years ago. You can find classical music in the roots of every single form of music that exists today, so really, if you like any kind of music, you like classical music, you just haven’t bothered to listen to it without all the bells and whistles that we like to add to our music today. In fact, classical music is completely pure, completely without ego. When you play, you are connecting to the person who wrote the music and everyone else who has played it before. You are part of history and that is an extraordinary thing.”
When I finished I was completely out of breath. Jake didn’t say anything for a moment, just stared down at me, and the intensity of his gaze made me blush. I felt totally exposed, as if I had just taken off my clothes in front of a stranger instead of telling my neighbor the reasons I loved playing the classics.
“I—” I started to say, but before I could get the sentence out, Jake pulled me into his arms and slanted his gorgeous mouth against mine.

I mean....**SWOON**

Jake is good people. He became Ella's support system when she felt that no one in her life was there for her. He never once doubted her skills as a pianist and came through for her in the most adorable way when she thought things were over between them.

I really liked this book. Once I picked it up, I couldn't put it down and I finished it in record time. There were plenty of lighthearted moment that made me laugh and it made me crave brownies, which I have year to make. (Trust me, it will make sense once you read it.) Katie has become one of those must read authors for me and I look forward to reading her future books.

My Review

I received an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Nathan is a rare breed. He's smart. Sexy. Funny. Down to earth. He's also college baseball player with fantastic prospects. He will enter the draft when the season is over and while he will welcome the fame and fortune that comes with all of that, he doesn't necessarily feel that he deserves it. Especially all the media attention.

So when Sophie shows up to interview Nathan, she has a problem. He's standoffish and wants nothing to do with her. But Sophie is determined to write the article and prove to her chauvinistic coworkers that she belongs in her job despite never getting a college degree. Sophie befriends Mandy, the team photographer, who also happens to be friends with Nathan. She gives her some insight on how to get Nathan to open up and along the way the two of them become friends. The friendship and encouragement from Mandy was just what Sophie needed to keep her head in the game.

It doesn't take Nathan long to realize that he misjudged Sophie and while he doesn't give her the story she wants, the two of them form a friendship. They get a good rapport going and at times it's actually quite  sweet. They quote Titanic at each other and Sophie even goes to one of his classes with him:
“What?” I asked, feeling very exposed in front of him.
“You’re just not what I expected,”he said. “When they told me a journalist from the Register was coming to do an article on me, well, I guess I just thought you would be different.”
“Sorry to disappoint,” I retorted, my hackles rising. I might not have been what he had expected, but I was a damn good journalist and I was going to write a damn good story on him with or without his approval.
“I didn’t say that,” he said as we reached the lecture hall. He sighed. “Look, I know you’re just trying to do your job and all, I just don’t see the point of all this.”
“I’m here to help you,” I assured him, not really understanding how someone could be on the verge of becoming such a huge star and be so reluctant to talk about himself. “There’s a good chance you’ll be a public figure soon and people will want to get to know you. I want them to see your best side.”
“And sitting in on my poetry class is going to help show that?”
“It depends,” I teased. “Are you going to be reciting poetry in there?”
He leaned forward, that wonderful smell of grass invading my senses and for a moment I thought he might kiss me. But instead, he spoke, in a voice that was almost a whisper:
“I will touch you with my mind. Touch you and touch and touch. Until you give.”
My mouth dropped open and placing a finger beneath my chin, Nathan gently closed it.
“e.e. cummings,” he said, turning to open the door to the lecture hall. “You coming?”he asked, the question equally naughty and innocent, and without a word, I followed him in.
HE. TAKES. POETRY. Good lord. Just when I thought he couldn't get any better. It's also obvious that Nathan and Sophie are attracted to each other, but Sophie doesn't want that attraction to get in the way of writing the story. She held out much longer than most people would, but eventually she gives in. These two are HOT and they definitely steamed up my e-reader.

Just when things seem to be going Sophie's way, her disgusting, female hating coworker shows up to take over the story. He basically makes her his assistant and when he discovers that Nathan does have a small skeleton in his closet, he is determined to write a story that will tarnish Nathan's reputation.

I was so proud of Sophie with the way she handled the situation. Sure, she got knocked down and lost the boy (temporarily), but she did the right thing. She's a tough woman and I knew that the whole situation would just make her stronger. And I admit that I did a little fist pump celebration when her coworker got his comeuppance. Jerk.

I love epilogues and this book had a great one. We get a little glimpse into Sophie and Nathan's life six months down the road and it is absolutely lovely.

I really enjoyed this book. There is a really adorable subplot involving Nathan's best friend, Chris, and Mandy. It's one of those "they like each other but don't have enough courage to tell the other person how they feel" stories and I loved it. I loved how shy they were around each other...it was the cutest. I would actually love for them the get their own book...maybe just a novella? Get their story from their POV? What do you say Katie McCoy?
