REVIEW & EXCERPT TOUR: Being Brooke by Emma Hart

My name is Brooke Barker…

And I’m a freaking disaster.

No, seriously. I’m a college drop-out working a dead-end job, my best friend Carly’s dog gets more action than I do, and I have more bad dates in my diary than there are movie remakes.

Not to mention I’m completely and utterly in love with Cain Elliott.

The problem? He’s in a relationship. With a girl who’s so plastic she makes Barbie cry herself to sleep with jealousy.

The second problem? He’s my best friend.

My shut-up-and-put-harry-potter, yes-this-is-your-shirt, help-I-have-no-power, crap-I’m-out-of-tampon, kinda best friend.

And that’s all he can be, right?

Right.

Being Brooke is a standalone romantic comedy. Hilarious, super-sexy, and possibly highly inappropriate at times, this is the perfect feel-good read!

EXCERPT

Cain’s phone begins to buzz on the table. The screen lights up, and the short name on the screen makes me have to fight a frown.

I know it’s Nina. It always is. It’s like she has a Brooke-dar. She can sense whenever Cain and I are alone and hanging out.

My heart sinks, slowly but heavily, and I school my expression into one of not caring. I refuse to look away from the TV now.

Cain hands me his pizza box, which I take, begrudgingly, then he leans forward and grabs his phone. He waits for the buzzing to stop, then unlocks it and turns it off vibrate.

Then? Then he shoves it under the table, screen down.

Ho. Lee. Shit.

I gape at him. I can’t help it.

A piece of pepperoni drops off the slice of pizza in my hand—the same one that’s frozen halfway to my mouth as I stare at him in total disbelief. Did he really just do it?

“What?” Cain shrugs and takes his box back, grabbing a piece of half-eaten, meaty pizza and shoving the end in his mouth. The crust crunches as he bites down.

I swallow and glance at the coffee table. “I don’t think you’ve ever not taken a call from her.” I can’t help the derogatory way I say ’her’. It’s not intentional—honest. It’s ingrained in me to be vicious to other women. I think it’s a female thing. Self-preservation and all that.

“I don’t think I ever haven’t either.” Cain tilts his head to the side and meets my gaze, a suspicious glint in his green eyes. “But the point is, we haven’t done this in weeks, and I’m having too much fun to leave. Besides, we have all this junk food. If I don’t help you eat it, you’ll eat it all, then it’ll be my fault when your pants don’t fit.”

Oh my god.

“Does she know you’re here?” I smirk slyly and raise my eyebrows.

He shifts uncomfortably. With a cough, he puts his pizza down and grabs his beer bottle to swig from it.

Oh. My. Shitty. Life.

“She doesn’t, does she?” I sit up straight, throwing my half-slice back into my box and shoving his shoulder. “Cain!”

“No,” he mumbles, scratching the back of his ear. “She doesn’t know.”

I laugh. I can’t help it. It’s totally immature of me to delight in the fact he hasn’t told the Prissy Princess where is he and he’s ignoring her calls, but I do. It’s hilarious.

And, okay. I’m smug. Totally smug. There’s only one reason he hasn’t told her, and that’s because she hates me too.

Bitchy Best Friend Mission: Level Up!

“And tell me.” I snicker, just about holding back the volcano of laughter threatening to erupt. “Where does Nina think you are?”

“She thinks I’m at Mom’s.” He looks at me, his lips flattening into a thin line. “Stop laughing, B. No, don’t shake your damn head. I fucking mean it. She’s a little insecure over my friendship with you and Carly, that’s all. Sometimes it’s easier to just tell a... little white lie.”

“A little white lie? She thinks you’re at your mom’s!” I laugh harder and wipe at my eyes because they feel a little too wet.

“I just want the best of both worlds right now, all right?”

“What is the best of both worlds? Pizza with me and blow jobs from her?”

“She chooses not to eat gluten. Until she finds a gluten-free recipe she likes, I can’t eat pizza when she’s around.”

Which is a lot.

I raise my eyebrows again. “Your girlfriend won’t eat gluten but she’ll happily put your dick in her mouth?”

“Brooke. Don’t be a bitch.” He chucks a piece of chicken from his pizza at me, his eyes narrowing.

I’m dying. I think this is it—this is how I die, laughing at Cain’s lame excuses for lying to his girlfriend about spending time with me.

“Oh my fuck. This is hilarious. Seriously. Someone call Comedy Central.”

“Brooke.” He says my name again, this time quieter.

I stop laughing. Just about.

“I’m sorry. I just think it’s funny. You want me to be nice to her but you lie to her about spending time with me.” I shrug a shoulder and peel a piece of pepperoni off my pizza. I’m not even that hungry anymore.

He sighs, putting the top down on his box, and sits back. “She thinks there’s something going on between us.”

I laugh even harder because I might cry if I don’t.

Hi, breaking heart. Grab the tissues, yo.

There’s an awkward silence hanging between us now. It’s not the first time someone has thought that, but given that the more time I spend with Cain, the more I seem to fall for him, it’s awkward. Especially since he’s lying to her just to hang out with me.

I clear my throat and look up at him. “That’s ridiculous. You’re my best friend. Like anything would ever happen between us. I can’t put up with your shit taste in music, for a start.”

“Exactly,” he replies in a quieter voice, scratching behind his ear again. “It’s fucking stupid. I can’t stand your taste in music either. Who the fuck likes Justin Bieber?”

“People who think Kanye West should retire.”

My Review

I received an advanced copy of this book with the promise of an honest review.

Olivia meets Nate when he becomes the subject of a sports documentary that she is producing. A documentary that will help her move up in the world of a male dominated industry. Nate has been drafted by the New York Warriors and the documentary will follow his path from college to the professional team. He's hesitant about participating, but he knows that it will be beneficial to his career.

The first time Olivia and Nate meet is at the house he shares with a few college teammates. After being greeted by Nate's three shirtless roommates (it was quite comical), she comes face to face with the man himself. She is immediately struck by how attractive he is, but manages to reel it in and get the first interview done. After all, she is a professional and has a job to do. After meeting a few times, Nate's initial wariness goes away but he is still worried. An incident that occurred during his freshman year, one that he absolutely never talks about, threatens to emerge and he wants it to stay out of the documentary. But it's Olivia's job to make sure the documentary covers everything, whether Nate likes it or not. They come to an understanding about the subject and by the time they make it to New York, their relationship has become intimate. While at first they manage to keep their professional and personal relationships separate, life has a way of making things difficult and both of their happiness is threatened.

I can't even begin to explain how much I love Olivia and Nate. These two were such a wonderful couple. The chemistry between them was absolutely electricI found myself eagerly anticipating that moment when Olivia and Nate crossed the line of inappropriateness. And the pay off was amazing.
“I know how to have fun,” I said, my hands gripping the edges of the pool table.
He grinned, his lips now only inches from mine. “Good. Let’s have some fun then.”
Nate hesitated for just a moment, and in that second the knowledge that being with him was a terrible idea reared its ugly head. But before I had a chance to fully process it, he closed the gap between us, his lips grazing mine in an almost kiss. He teased, his gaze locked on me the entire time, consuming me, washing away my lingering concerns that this shouldn’t be happening.
“Nate…we shouldn’t. We can’t,” I spoke the words against his lips, even as I was unable to muster the will to push him away.
“And yet we are,” he said, smiling against my mouth. Firm hands cupped my neck, pulling me closer and I let my body go lax against his as he deepened the kiss. And my God, could Nate Sullivan kiss. His mouth devoured mine, biting and sucking, and there in his childhood Batcave, I all but melted into his arms.
A noise that sounded oddly like a moan filled the space between us and a split second later, I realized it had come from me. Nate pulled back, his mouth twitching in a half smile as he said, “This okay?”
I schooled my features as victory flared in his eyes, knowing the shock of just how much more than okay his kiss was had to be written all over my face.
Nate sank to his knees, his hands skimming the length of my back, covering my butt with a squeeze and moving down to rub along the bare skin of my legs. My breath hitched when they trailed a path back up and under my skirt, where he slipped them under the fabric of my underwear.
“Your skin is like fucking silk.” He groaned, dropping his head to my stomach. Nate caught the hem of my t-shirt in his mouth and pulled at it, practically growling as he tilted his head to look at me. Releasing it, he said, “You know what I thought the first time I saw you?”
“That I was the devil, here to ruin your life?”
He chuckled, his breath warming my stomach. “That was my second thought.” His hands began making small circles over my skin. “I thought you were the team’s way of hazing me. Making me sweat over some bullshit documentary and then sending you as the punch line. Thought I’d died and gone to heaven for a second there.”
My eyes widened. “You…you thought I was a stripper?” I started to push away from him but his grip tightened on my butt.
“No, I merely hoped you were.”
No sooner than the words were out of his mouth he lifted me, his hands big enough to create a chair for my butt. He stood, turning us so his back was to the pool table and lowered me back down.
I looked up at him, not even trying to hide the wonder I knew was written across my face. “Who are you, Nate Sullivan?”
“I thought I was just a college kid.” He cocked his head, fire filling his gaze. “Isn’t that right?”
Before I could respond, he turned away, bending to pull the sheet that covered the pool table up and off it.
I frowned. “I never said that.”
He turned back to me, his rough hands cupping my face as he kissed me, the playfulness of before gone. “No, but that’s what you think.”
Picking me up, he turned and walked the few paces to the table, setting me down on the ledge as he released the hold he had on my lower lip.
“You don’t kiss like a college kid.”
“I don’t fuck like one either.”
Truer words have never been spoken. At that point Olivia and Nate have been dancing around each other for a while and they know that them getting together it is inevitable, so they just give in. And from there it just gets hotter. WOW.

This book is easily one of the best I have read this year. I just loved everything about it. Sports romance. Older woman/younger man. NYC location. Comedy. Angst. Crazy sexual tension you can cut with a knife. And of course lots of sexy times. And all of it is FAN-FREAKING-TASTIC.

My Review

I received an advanced copy of this book with the promise of an honest review.

Camille Valon is used to being in the spotlight, but this time it is different. After waking up on the lawn of her parent's house to find it engulfed in flames and her parents inside, she is now fearing for her life. To get away from everything she goes to upstate New York to Hollis House. Very few people know that her family owns it and it is the perfect place to escape for a while.

Nathan Rush is the groundskeeper at Hollis House. He took over after his father passed away and Harlin Falls has been his home his whole life. As he prepares for Camille's arrival he can't help but expect a cold, closed off woman who is grieving her parents. At first that is exactly what he gets, but as the two of them spend more time together, Nathan finds that she actually quite the opposite. Yes, she is grieving her parents, but she is also trying to figure out what do next. Her life has been anything but normal and this tragedy has forced her to figure out what she really wants. As Camille and Nathan grow closer and the threat against her becomes very real, they both discover that what they need is each other.
“Please,” I detach and breathe the words against his lips, “I need you to kiss me.”
My plea seems to move something in him, because all at once his hands are cupping my cheeks and he’s pulling my face towards his. His lips cover mine, and this time, I can’t even have a reaction.
I can’t even think.
Warm, pliable, spectacular, mind-bending.All of my reactions come in snippets, instantly replaced by another emotion, another feeling. What Nathan is doing to me, the way he’s twisting up my insides and making me feel pulses and tingles in a place I’ve never felt them before…it’s magical. He’s erasing everything bad that has happened. He’s giving me an out of my life, and I’m taking it.
His arms encircle me, pushing my breasts against his front and making my nipples harden in an instant. So this is what all of the fuss is about.
I can’t get close enough to him fast enough. I want Nathan to rip off my clothes; I want things I’m not even sure I fully know about…
Oh God. His tongue is in my mouth. Tangling and dancing with mine, showing me everything he can do with it. Showing me exactly how he must use his …penis. No, that’s too clinical. His cock. How he must use that part of his anatomy in another place he can plunge into. It sends a chill of delight and anticipation running down my body, settling between the juncture of me and throbbing. Hard.
As quickly as we started, he breaks it off. Nathan’s breaths come in puffs, his chest heaving and his eyes pinning me to the spot.
“We…shouldn’t.” The words sound painful coming out of his throat.
At first I’m too stunned, to stirred up from that kiss, to speak. “Why not?”
He rakes his hands through his hair, walking across the library. “You’re messed up about what happened to your parents. And the notes, and the investigation. And, not to mention, you’re my employer. I…I took advantage of you.”
“You did not take advantage of me. I wanted that. I want more of it.” I’m standing my ground, finding my voice at the time I really need it.
Because of all of the things that have happened to me in the past month, there is nothing I’m more sure of than that I want Nathan Rush to kiss me again.
“We can’t.” His eyes are full of apologies.
And then he walks out, exiting the library and I assume leaving the house.
I just stand next to the desk, my phone face down on it, touching the lips that he just branded.
Nathan was such a genuine person and he was so good at pulling Camille out of her shell. She even gets to a point where she trusts him enough to allow him to see the real her, which is something she has never done before. Their love for each other is beautiful and such an important part of the story. But there is also the element of suspense and what exactly happened the night her parents were murdered that the author was able to pull off in fantastic fashion. I thought the book was going to go one way, but then it went in a completely different direction. Carrie keeps surprising me with the range of stories she writes. I never get bored while reading her books and On Thin Ice is no exception.
