There is speculation that he killed a girl . . .

Journalist Hannah Black has just been given the assignment of a lifetime: Get the exclusive story from the Chicago Bears’ new starting quarterback, Derek Cage. There’s only one problem—Derek refuses to talk to reporters. The son of a famed Illinois senator, this football star despises the media.

Hannah has never been one to follow orders, especially when she wants something. When her new assignment tries to give her the brush off, Hannah won't take no for an answer, going to extremes to get the attention of this superstar athlete.

Drawn to her quirky questions and die-hard persistence, Derek begins opening up to this rookie reporter, and he can’t stay away no matter how hard he tries.

As the two get closer, Hannah finds herself falling for the enigmatic quarterback. But nothing’s ever easy. As a decade old secret comes to light, Hannah has to decide how far she’ll go and how many lines she’s willing to cross to keep Derek safe.

Is uncovering the truth worth the risk of losing it all?

EXCERPT

“Is this your idea of staying out of the press?” My dad has the front page of the sports section open on my kitchen table. Hannah is looking up at me with trust in her eyes. A feeling I won’t soon forget. A feeling I then destroyed.

My father’s irate, cold expression makes me realize how exhausted I am. My life is lived through a microscope, a specimen existing in a Petri dish for the world to judge.

“Dad, this is nothing.”

“Nothing? You were almost arrested.”

“But I wasn’t.”

After dropping Hannah at her apartment, I called my attorney, and he handled everything. The photographers had been too close, a viable threat. My actions were warranted. Of course, the media chooses to leave those details out of their coverage.

“It’s that reporter. I’m sure she tipped them off. I told you to stay away from her.”

Crumpling the paper, I toss it in the trash. “No.”

He startles at my defiance. The air has shifted.

“This is not how a Cage behaves, Derek.”

“I never asked for this last name. Never wanted the life you lead. Don’t put that burden on my shoulders.”

“Most people would give anything to have your life, to be a part of the Cage dynasty. Yet you act like it’s a curse.”

I hold my father’s stare, wondering how flesh and blood can be so different.

“It is a curse.”

“They’ll destroy you.” He pounds a fist on the table, the noise vibrating off the walls. “The stories they’ll tell. You’ll be finished, your career done, your life worthless. Just like Lily’s.”

“You think I murdered her, don’t you?”

EXCERPT

There is a small commotion at the entrance of the hotel. Derek strolls into the lobby. The dark strands of his hair are pulled off his face, and his square jaw is covered in stubble. Sexy. He’s aloof. His fuck-off attitude has my pulse quickening.

He affects me more than I’d care to admit, and I’m defenseless when he spots me, his eyes piercing the distance between us, his brow creasing, his frown tightening.

Lowering his dark lashes, he stops and inhales a deep breath. It seems my appearance has angered him, but then he opens his stunning blue eyes, and a sexy and sweet grin appears on his face, sending my heart into panic mode. He’s magnificent. He’s not walking but striding toward me.

His white button-down is un-tucked over faded blue jeans, and the sleeves are rolled to his elbows. “Hannah.” He takes the seat beside me. “I didn’t realize press was staying in this hotel.”

“I’m not officially press. I’m here to see you.”

The bartender interrupts us. “Can I get you a drink, Mr. Cage?”

Derek nods. “Water, please.” He fingers a loose tendril of hair on my cheek. “I have a game tomorrow, Hannah.”

He slides his knees between mine, trailing his fingers sensually down my bare arm. My skin tingles in its wake. It’s the oddest sensation, and it’s distracting.

“I know. I came to watch, cheer you on.” My voice is higher than usual, my sudden desire for him impossible to hide.

A smile lights his face, causing butterflies to take flight inside my stomach. Carl puts the water in front of Derek, and as he takes a sip, I’m fixated on the movement of his throat, the strength of his jaw, the bronze color of his skin.

Derek sets the glass down. “Do you have a ticket?”

With unsteady hands, I pull one out of my purse and wave it in front of him.

He snatches it from my fingers, studies it. Seemingly disappointed he says, “This is press seating.”

Larry had pulled a few strings yesterday when I called, begging him to get me a pass into this game. Technically, I’m not press, Travis is. My focus is on Derek Cage, not the Bears. But I need to be there. I will always need to be there if I’m going to learn anything about Derek Cage. Two hours later, I had one VIP ticket to the press box and locker room access.

“Connections,” I say with a shrug.

Derek grips the ticket between his thumb and forefinger. In one swift move, he rips it in two. “What are you—?”

“I’ll get you a field pass and a seat in the owner’s box. You don’t have to sit with the parasites.”

My heart races; my palms sweat. What is going on here? I stare at the liquor bottles that line the back of the bar. “Derek. I am the press.”

“No. You’re my press.”

I stare at him speechless. It’s what I’ve wanted, a break into that coat of armor, but I wasn’t expecting it.

“Ask me anything you want, Hannah.”

“What?” I quickly turn in his direction.

He leans forward and slides his hands up my legs, moving my dress high on my thighs, and I think my vagina has had a coronary.

Sensations explode between my legs when the warmth of his breath flutters across my ear, my heart pounding furiously.

“You are sitting in this bar, wearing a fuck-me-now dress and shoes I’d ask you to leave on if you were in my bed. Your nipples are as hard as gum drops, and you expect me to believe you came here to watch the game?”

Heat floods my cheeks, and I sneak a quick peek down. For fuck’s sake, my nipples are hard. Note to self: wear a padded bra around this man.

Leaning forward, his lips graze the outer edge of my ear. “Ask me,” he whispers. “Ask me anything you want.”

Exclusive Excerpt

The room falls still, and hushed whispers spiral through the air. I search for the source of the deep, penetrating voice and meet the eyes of a man, standing in front of a locker with the name Cage, the number 18 prominently displayed on a white plaque above the open locker.

Derek Cage.

He’s here, and he’s magnetizing. His stare is intense, almost frightening. He’s enraged, like an animal ready to spring forward and rip Colt Dixon’s head off. His chiseled jaw ticks, his nostrils flare, and his broad chest rises and falls in rapid successions. He’s terrifying . . . and stunning.

Colt laughs from deep in his belly, throwing his hands up in surrender, breaking the tightrope of tension electrifying the room. “Sorry, Rage, didn’t know she was already spoken for.”

Derek Cage isn’t paying attention to Colt. He isn’t bothered with the reporters that are stepping up to grab his attention. He’s too busy glaring at me with turbulent blue eyes that remind me of the ocean on a stormy day.

Unable to move or barely breathe, I stare back. This man is dripping in sexiness. He’s a virtual poster boy for tall, dark, and handsome. With his chiseled jaw and endless amounts of smooth, beautiful skin, he has my undivided attention. An impeccable six-pack leads to narrow hips divided by a tantalizing dark trail of perfectly placed hair that modestly escapes into a thick white towel. Damn.

A platinum chain hangs around his neck, and tattoos line his sides, coiling around him like a rope. Ink that’s written in what must be Sanskrit.

I can’t tear my focus away, mesmerized by the sheer presence of him.

A combination of curiosity and annoyance crosses his face. His gaze travels deliberately along the length of my body, stopping for a beat on my mouth and again on my chest. My heart pounds, as my veins hum with electricity. I take a step forward. His eyes meet mine. A slight hesitation shadows his expression as though he doesn’t know what he’ll do if I speak to him.

The room erupts in chaos, breaking the invisible moment we’ve just shared. Reporters clamor for a shot at the stunning man before me, their bodies surrounding him, holding recorders in front of his face as they lob questions in his direction.

Derek gazes past them, lifting his chin to spot me over the crowd, but it’s futile. There are too many people interfering. I watch a frustrated scowl appear on his lips, and a crease form between his eyes. He faces his locker and pulls a black T-shirt over his head, then tosses a Cubs baseball cap over his dark mahogany hair. I watch in fascination as he pulls on a pair of track pants under his towel, going about his business as though fifteen microphones are not pointed in his direction. Tossing his towel in the hamper, he grabs his duffel and pushes through the crowd, keeping his head cast down.

I can’t move, my feet frozen in place, as the most captivating man I’ve ever seen begins to leave the room. Groans echo around me, snapping me back to reality.

“Wait,” I rasp out.

Derek keeps walking.

“Mr. Cage. Can you wait a second?”

His head swivels in my direction, and with a heavy sigh, he confidently strides over to me. Breaking all codes of personal space, Derek Cage enters my zone. His body is radiating heat, his smell intoxicating, his male presence overwhelming. I swallow hard, my mouth too dry to form words.

Under thick dark lashes, he studies my face, an obvious interest softening his features. “What do you want?”
